- Need to Improve Science Teaching and Learning in
Earth Systems Sciences - There is a need for all students in our nation to
perform at levels that are compatible with the
National Science Education Standards, as well as
improving overall academic performance. - A national awareness of the need to improve
teaching and learning in science and mathematics
is occurring in response to this decline. - There is a significant need within the public
school system to involve teachers and students
with research scientists in an interdisciplinary
approach to learning about local environmental
issues.

- Role Play / Case Studies
- All activities related to water and air quality
are directly correlated to authentic Regional
(Caribbean), National and Global events - Measurements taken are always provided in context
with future consequences (health or economic)
16Why we SHOULD close beaches!
- Health risk
- sick tourists with bad experience less likely to
come back! - recreational users (taxpayers) deserve to be
protected and informed! - Business
- short term temporary economic loss! But
- long term benefits healthy, happy consumers,
think of future economy - Legal
- loss of life or health liability? Legally cannot
close down beaches like in other states, where do
our priorities lie?
17How does this affect ME!
- Personally native of FL, Ive been fishing many
years, sewage spill contaminates water killing
fish, health and ecological hazard. - Other organisms destroys marine habitat
(seagrasses, reefs) which are know nursery
habitats for fish! - Recreation no swimming, surfing, diving, spear
fishing! - My business depletes future fish stocks,
discourages tourists from chartering my boat - Tourism decreased revenue from sports fishermen
and recreation, FL hotspot for such activities
18Fishing is BIG business!!
- Recent study 3 million visitors go salt water
- fishing each year, totaling 20 million
angler - trips each year!
- Economic impact ? 1991 Florida Sea Grant
Resident anglers spent 1.3 billion in 1991-92 on
salt water fishing, 22,887 full-time jobs
resulted from recreational fishing.. - Tourist contribution ? study also reports
visitors contributing 1.3 billion to the state's
economy just for salt water fishing and created
23,518 jobs. - Obviously important economic asset to the
state. - Essential to have clean water and healthy aquatic
habitats - then fish populations can flourish and reproduce,
ensuring that there are fish to catch today,
tomorrow and in the years to come.

- Teachers Currently at Sea
- The teachers are having a great first cruise
this summer - or at least Suzanne is. Sherwin has
been battling some sea-sickness. - The Captain changed the trip route due to poor
weather. We are not going to Cozumel at all. We
will spend two days at sea and arrive at Nassau
Friday. We have changed the schedules since the
two sea days. We will give a tour and video
Thursday Friday morning, then 3 tours Thursday
afternoon, the presentation of ours and John's
will be Friday afternoon. - Both teachers have been able to calibrate their
instruments and work on their projects. They have
collected some nice plankton samples coming out
of Belize. - Sherwin and Suzanne gave a nice presentation on
using the microscope to the kids in the onboard
Adventure Youth program area during the Belize
port of call. The older kids were so enthralled
that they didn't want them to stop. They will
give their presentations to the general family
audiences tomorrow. - I see the kids in the hallways and they call me
the microscope lady. People come by to look at
the weather who have been at the tour again and
again. Also people have been referred to come to
my tours or visit me from others. I have people
dropping in all day. I spend several hours in the
morning, a few in the afternoon and a couple of
hours in the evening.

- NUTS AND BOLTS OF STRUCTURING A PARTNERSHIP
43Structuring a Partnership University of Miami
Researchers, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, and
the Public School System
- During the initial stage of the partnership, it
is important to decide what grade level in which
to focus your efforts. - Most of the Rosenstiel School educational
programs focus on high school level students and
teachers. - It is also imperative to have a liaison belonging
equally to the university and the public school
system. This person works with supervisors in
both the university and school system and has
unhindered movement within the university and the
public school system. - This essential piece of the partnership can be
accomplished by the university funding of a
public school Educational Specialist. - The following list of components used in the UM
Rosenstiel School/RCCL/M-DCPS model can provide
examples for structuring a successful
partnership
