Global Drivers
In the short term, both thermal and metallurgical
coal imports in China are forecast to increase
as Chinas rapid economic growth and
consequently coal consumption exceeds the
capacity of domestic production. Indias power
ministry has plans to develop five ultra-mega
coal fired power plants with a capacity of 4000
megawatts which would each require around 20
million tonnes of coal a year. At least three of
these plants are intended to operate on imported
coal. The ultra-mega projects are intended to
be developed by 2012, although a range of new
coal projects in the interim will boost demand
for imported coal. Source ABARE, NAB Group
