Learning Objectives
  • Participants will learn
  • What glucagon is
  • How glucagon should be stored
  • When glucagon is used
  • How to administer glucagon

4
What is Glucagon?
  • Naturally occurring hormone made in the pancreas
  • A life-saving, injectable hormone that raises
    blood glucose level
  • Treatment for severe hypoglycemia
  • Can save a life
  • Cannot harm a student

5
Glucagon
  • Comes in a individual case for each diabetic
    student
  • The medication is pre-measured
  • The directions for giving the shot are right
    there for you to review!
  • It comes in a vial containing powder that must
be mixed with the pre-filled syringe

6
Glucagon Kit Storage
  • Place As designated in DMMP.
  • Store at room temperature
  • Expiration date Monitor
  • After mixing, dispose of any unused portion.

7
Emergency Kit Contents
  • 1 mg of freeze-dried glucagon (Vial)
  • 1 ml of water for reconstitution (Syringe)

Combine immediately before use
8
Two Makers of Glucagon
  • The Glucagon Emergency Kit from Eli Lilly
  • The Glucagon Emergency Kit from Novo Nordisk

9
When to Give Glucagon
  • If authorized by the students DMMP and if
    student exhibits
  • Unconsciousness, unresponsiveness
  • Convulsions or seizures
  • Inability to safely eat or drink

10
Prepare the Glucagon
  • Remove vial cap
  • Remove needle cover
  • Inject contents of syringe into vial held
    upright
  • Remove needle from vial. Handle safely
  • Swirl vial gently until powder is dissolved and
    liquid is clear

11
Fill the Syringe
  • Once solution is clear
  • Hold vial upside down and withdraw all solution
into syringe. If the student weighs less than 44
pounds (about 5 years old), only 1/2 of the
solution is withdrawn into the syringe
  • Remove needle from vial

12
Remove the Bubbles
  • Hold syringe upright and remove air bubbles by
    tapping syringe and expelling air

13
Clean the Skin
  • Expose injection site upper, outer area of arm
    or thigh
  • Hold syringe safely, use other hand to clean
    injection site with alcohol

Wipe Chosen Site
14
Inject the Glucagon
Pinch up skin.
  • Pinch up skin/ muscle
  • Insert needle straight into skin/muscle of arm or
    thigh
  • Push plunger in to inject Glucagon
  • Count to 5

Push needle straight in!
Push plunger in.
15
Remove the Needle
  • Remove needle while pressing gently with alcohol
wipe or cotton ball at injection site
  • DO NOT RECAP THE NEEDLE!
  • Massage site for 10 seconds, apply Band-Aid if
    necessary
  • Carefully put used syringe back into the Glucagon
    case

Withdraw the needle and wipe the site.
16
After Injecting
  • May take 15-20 minutes for student to regain
    consciousness.
  • Check blood sugar.
  • Give sips of fruit juice or regular soda, once
student is awake and able to drink.
  • Advance diet as tolerated.
  • Document as per DMMP

17
After Administration
  • Keep the student on his/her side - this is the
Recovery Position that keeps them safe
  • It may take the student 10-20 minutes to wake up
  • Maintain an open airway
  • Wait for EMS - hopefully theyve already arrived!

18
Procedure Act Immediately
  • Position student safely on side for comfort and
    protection from injury
  • Call 911, parents, school nurse as per DMMP

19
Don't be surprised if. . .
  • Student does not remember being unconscious,
    incoherent or has a headache
  • Blood sugar becomes very high (over 200)
  • Nausea or vomiting occurs
