• Private Pilot Examinee (45) and a CFI Check Pilot
  (71)
• Simulated forced landing, no flap, in a crosswind
  (9kts) to a 4,500 runway
• Hard landing with a bounce and prop strike
• Headed for side of runway CFI took the yoke and
  yelled at least twice to pull the power.
• CFI admits landing too far down runway and
  suspects that the examinee added power during the
  hard landing

• In General Aviation (GA), landing accidents
  account for 1/3 (33) of all aircraft accidents
• CAP experienced 4 out of 6 (66)
• Why do you think this is happening?
• In GA, 25 of landing accidents occur during
  flight instruction
• 3 out of 4 CAP landing accidents (75) this year
  had Certified Flight Instructors onboard
• How can we turn this around?

• Most landing accidents are survivable only
  about 1-3 of fatal GA accidents are caused by
  poor landings
• The good news is all our CAP pilots survived
  their landing accidents
• Poor landings are responsible for nearly 500 bent
  GA aircraft per year
• Poor landings consistently a top CAP trend
• Currency and Proficiency will help
• Stay at the top of your game!

Lebanon, MO (AZ Wing)

• 21 Apr 04, Returning balloon to IL Wing
• Ford E-350, 12-passenger van with trailer
• The driver (74) and 2 other senior members (54
  75) shared driving all day all night
• At 0610, van entered the interstate median
• Traveled back across the interstate and ran off
  the road on the right side
• The van rolled, ejecting the rear passenger, who
  was not wearing a seatbelt
• The driver and other front seat passenger were
  treated for minor injuries and released

Kenosha Pass, CO

• 6 Jun 04, Returning from a RMLR SAREX
• Cadet (16) was driving a Toyota 4 Runner
• Vehicle left the paved surface and entered the
  right gravel shoulder
• Driver overcorrected, went across the road
• Hit the left guard rail nearly head-on
• Front windshield popped-out and vehicle flipped
  over the guard rail
• Flipped end-over-end 4 times in the air
• Struck tree tops and landed on the wheels
• Broken arm and jaw with scalp laceration

• Emphasize supervision of cadet sports
• Horseplay on the increase dont tolerate
• 9 out of 10 injuries (90) were cadets
