2What is numeracy?
3What is numeracy?
- Numeracy is the ability to use
- effectively the mathematics
- required to meet the general
- demands of life at home and
- at work, and for participation
- in community and civic life.
4Numeracy
- To be numerate is to use mathematical ideas
effectively to make sense of the world. - It means
- deciding when to use mathematics
- choosing the correct mathematics to use
- e.g. spatial, numerical, graphical, statistical
- applying mathematics to different situations
- evaluating its use
- communicating mathematical information in a range
of practical situations.
5- Numeracy is a fundamental component of learning
across all areas of the curriculum. - Every day, students are given
- tasks to complete, problems
- to solve and objects to make
- that require the thoughtful and
- practical use of mathematics.
6Numeracymoments
7Reading, interpreting and constructing timelines.
8Reading maps, locating countries and calculating
distances on maps using a scale.
9Locating places using coordinates, interpreting
scales and calculating real distances.
10Reading and interpreting tables, analysing data
and making conclusions.
11Understanding graphs
If a new student arrived today, how do you think
they would travel?
12Think of the numeracy moments you have had in the
past24 hours
13Why is numeracy important?Imagine what it would
be likenot to be numerate...
A longitudinal study has shown that poor number
skills at school are associated with early school
leaving and a greater likelihood of being out of
work. (ACER,2000)
14Feeding the dog!
- How much dog food does a 10kg dog need?.
You send your daughter to feed the dog, confident
in the knowledge that she has learnt fractions at

The next day you send your son to feed the dog,
confident in the knowledge that he has learnt
fractions at school.
16Sad dog!
- Your son feeds the dog one and 1/3 cans!!
The next day you send your husband to feed the
dog, confident in the knowledge that he, at
least, has learnt fractions at school.
17Confused dog!
Your husband feeds the dog one and 1/3 cans!!
18Averages
- Sydney petrol prices have fallen from 1.40 a
litre at Sydney service stations in September to
an average of 1.13 - Michael Clarke has averaged only 25 in test
matches since his glorious 141 against New
Zealand in Brisbane a year ago - (SMH, 29-11-05)
19Group Task
- If the average of Michael Clarkes last three
matches was 12, what could the three scores have
been?
20Group Task
- Find the average height
- of your group.
