• 1950s
• The Petroleum Branch of AIME became the Society
  of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) of AIME
• First SPE Board of Directors meeting was held 6
  October 1957
• Membership was 12,500

Long Range Vision

• 1970s

• 1985 SPE incorporated separately from AIME
• Growth in professional membership
• Industry suffered a downturn
• Roughly half of all jobs were lost
• SPE membership remained stable, between 48,000

• Section growth was increasing, SPE was becoming
  more diverse
• The largest number of new sections in the eastern
  hemisphere (40)
