Title: Math Explorers

1
Math Explorers
  • The 2nd grade Math Explorers studied lines of
symmetry and geometric transformations. We went
on a symmetry scavenger hunt and took our own
photos of examples of symmetry. We found
symmetry in nature and architecture, and we also
created our own art that incorporates symmetry.
    Enjoy this symmetry slide show!

2
Human Star
  • We are in a star form in the photo. We
demonstrated rotational symmetry. This is an
example of symmetry in architecture. Symmetrical
objects are fun to draw and good to the human
eye. Our eyes are drawn to the lines of symmetry.

3
Teeter Totter Symmetry
  • We are sitting on the teeter totter on the
    playground. This structure has rotational
symmetry, and it also has a reflection and
translation. This is an example of symmetry in
    architecture. Symmetry helps builders make
    things balance.

Home plate
  • This is a photo of home plate on a baseball
field. This shape contains a reflection. There
is a lot of symmetry in a baseball field. The
bases are also symmetrical, and the field is laid
out in a symmetrical pattern. Symmetry is awesome
to the eye. There is a lot of symmetry in sports.

Swingset Symmetry
  • A swingset is in this photo. This is an example
of a reflection. It is an example of symmetry in
architecture. The symmetry helps this structure
balance. There is a lot of symmetry on our
    playground.

Rotating Leaves
  • There are leaves in the photo. They show
rotational symmetry as they grow. Each leaf also
has veins on it and they are symmetrical. Each
side of the leaf is an example of reflection.
This is an example of symmetry in nature. There
is tons of symmetry in nature - one leaf,
    flowers, and our bodies!

My Teeth
  • In this picture you can see my teeth! My teeth
in this picture are an example of a reflection.
This is an example of symmetry in nature. There
is a lot of symmetry in bodies, like eyes, arms,
    legs, and feet.

Flying Fairies
  • In this photo there is a picture of fairy wings.
The wings are an example of a reflection. They
are the same on both sides. The fairy wings are
an example of symmetry in nature. Some other
things that have symmetrical wings are bugs,
butterflies, and birds. I think the symmetry
helps them so they dont tip from side to side
    when they fly.

Lucky Symmetry
  • Clover is in this photo. They might be four-leaf
clover! Reflection and rotation are seen in
clover. This is an example of symmetry in
nature. You can see symmetry in the woods like in
    trees, insects, and leaves.

Student Swirl
  • In this picture, you will see students on a
spiral bike rack. Inside the bike rack there is
a rotation. The two bike racks side by side make
a translation. This is an example of symmetry in
    architecture. Symmetry is important because
people can do almost anything with symmetry as
long as there is a line of symmetry.

Student Star
  • People are sitting in a circle with their legs
bent to make a star. They are going in a
rotation. Its an example of symmetry in
building. It is fun to make symmetry!

The Car
  • In the photo is a Honda! The symmetry is a flip
or a reflection. This is an example of symmetry
in architecture or design. Cars have symmetry
because of their shape and its needed so they
    can balance.
  • Noah Cooley

23
Pyramid
  • People are getting in the shape of a pyramid! It
is a rotation. We can make pyramids using
reflections and translations too. Symmetry is
all over our world in buildings, and in nature.
The Ancient Egyptians used symmetry in their
    pyramids.

Seeing Symmetry
  • Im holding my glasses in my hand. My
glasses are a reflection. Because my eyes are
symmetrical, my glasses need to be symmetrical.
There are 3 types of symmetry - reflection,
    rotation, and translation.
