Highlights of the Induction Linacs for Muon
Collider mini-workshop FNAL, February 28, 2008
- Motivation
- RF structures are not well suited for
acceleration of strong single bunches with number
of particles in the 1012-1013 range - recent advances in induction linac technologies
promise 100MV/m in ns pulses - induction linac considered for Heavy Ion-driven
Inertial Fusion (HIF) is more powerful than what
we need for the proton driver, can we use their
know-how? - All talks can be found on
- https//mctf.fnal.gov/meetings/induction-linacs-fo
r-muon-collider-mini-workshop/ - Here I show some slides from the talks
- G.Caporaso (LLNL) High-gradient induction linac
RD at LLNL - A.Krasnykh (SLAC) Analysis of Induction Linac
Concept for High Gradient p Driver - W.Barletta (MIT) Ion Induction Linacs for
Inertial Fusion and High Energy Density Physics

Photo-conductive switches offer possibility to
control the waveform by light intensity (good for
matching!) but How much laser power is needed to
operate these switches? Wont it compromise the
overall wall-plug efficiency? An interesting
solution was proposed by A. Cardo-Sysoev (Ioffe
Institute, St.Petersburg, Russia) DSRD (Drift
Step Recovery Device) passive solid state
plasma switch for pulse forming lines ILC 2ns
kicker based on this switch is now being
developed by A.Krasnykh (SLAC) and F.Arntz
(Diversified Technologies, Inc. Bedford, Ma)

To achieve both high gradient and high efficiency
line 1 must contain ferrite Anatoly also
presented an inductor scheme with both inner ends
open, but provided no detailed explanation
promised to do this later

In the framework of the previous HIF project
based on Recirculating ILA, LLNL developed a
modulator with variable pulse length and spacing.
It found application in Advanced Radiography
Machine (ARM)
15kV, up to 6.7kA current
