Autism

• Definition
• Complex developmental disability that affects an
  individual in the areas of social interaction and
  communication.

• Spectrum Disorder
• -Individuals can exhibit any combinations of the
  behaviors and any degree of severity
• Resistance to change
• Difficulty expressing needs
• Repeating words or phrases
• Tantrums
• Prefers to be alone
• Spins objects
• Inappropriate attachments to objects
• No real fears of danger

• Definition
• Person who is impaired in processing linguistic
  information though hearing with or with out
  amplication.
• Characteristics
• Person whos hearing lose is greater than 90
  decibels are considered deaf
• Use of sign language

Speech and Language Impairments

• Definition
• problems in communication and related areas such
  as oral motor function
• Speech disorder refers to difficulties producing
  speech sounds or problems with voice quality
• Language disorders refers to an impairment in the
  ability to understand and/or use words in
  context, both verbally and nonverbally

Characteristics

• Simple sound substitutions
• Inability to understand or use language
• Inability to create functional speech or problems
  eating
• Possible causes include
• Hearing loss, neurological disorders, brain
  injury, mental retardation, drug abuse, physical
  impairments such as cleft lip or palate, and
  vocal misuse or abuse
• The cause is frequently unknown

• Definition
• There are several different types of brain injury
  which range from affecting just one portion of
  the brain, various areas, or all areas of the
  brain.

• Slow breathing rate increase in blood pressure
• Headache
• difficulty thinking straight, memory problems,
  poor judgment, poor attention span, a slowed
  thought processing speed)
• Difficulty speaking, slurred speech, difficulty
  swallowing
• Inappropriate emotional responses

• Definition
• people identified as possessing demonstrated or
  potential abilities that give evidence of high
  performing capabilities in intellectual,
  creative, specific academic or leadership areas,
  or ability in the performing or visual arts

• Comprehends well
• Acquires knowledge quickly
