• Julia Alvarez (the author) and her family had to
  leave D.R. in 1960 because her father opposed the
  dictator, Rafael Trujillo.
• Trujillo ran the country from 1930-1961, when he
  was assassinated.

• During Trujillos reign, people had few
  liberties, and the secret police watched closely
  for signs of opposition.
