Sonnet 116
  • Let me not to the marriage of true minds
  • Admit impediments. Love is not love
  • Which alters when it alterations finds,
  • Or bends with the remover to remove.
  • Oh no! It is and ever-fixed mark,
  • That looks on tempests and is never shaken
  • It is the star to every wandering bark,
  • Whose worths unknown although his height be
    taken.
  • Loves not Times fool, though rosy lips and
    cheeks
  • Within his bending sickles compass come
  • Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
  • But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
  • If this be error and upon me proved,
  • I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

The Translation
  • Let me not declare any reasons why two
  • True-minded people should be married. Love is not
    love
  • Which alters when it finds an alteration in
    circumstances.
  • Or bends from its firm stand even when the lovers
    are unfaithful
  • Oh no! it is a fixed mark
  • That sees storms but it never shaken
  • It love is the guiding star to every lost ship,
  • Whose value cannot be calculated, although its
    height can be measured.
  • Love is not at the mercy of Time, though its rosy
    lips and cheeks
  • Come within the compass of his Times sickle.
  • Love does not alter with hours and weeks
  • But, rather, it endures until the last day of
    life.
  • If I am proved wrong about these thoughts on love
  • Then I recant all that I have written, and no man
    has ever really loved.

Response
  • I chose sonnet 116 by William Shakespeare.
This poem stuck out to me because of the topic it
spoke on. It speaks on an emotion, we all can
relate to and have felt at one time or another,
called Love. One of my favorite lines in the
poem is line five when it states It love is an
ever fixed mark. I can relate to this line the
most because I believe that once you have loved
someone you will always love that person, even
when situations in your life goes wrong. In line
nine it states Loves not Times fool. I
believe this to be true because love will
withhold the hands of time, if it is true. It is
forever because it lives on the inside of you.
  • Feelings that you may have for another
person will show eventually whether it be openly
or in private. Love is a wonderful emotion that
all of us have felt at one time or another. I
believe if everyone in the world read
Shakespeares sonnet 116 and understood his work
they would find that love is forever.
