13New Resources for ASHE MembersAs your trusted
resource, ASHE works to provide you with the
information and tools you need to manage the
health care physical environment. We are happy to
provide you with two new members-only documents
that you can add to your ASHE "toolbox"
-
- Pre-move and Occupancy Coordination Checklist
- Don't plan a move without using ASHE's Pre-move
and Occupancy Coordination Checklist. Developed
by ASHE's 2008 Planning, Design and Construction
Committee, this incredible tool will help you
supervise the activities associated with pre-move
and occupancy of a facility. This document allows
you to monitor and evaluate your progress and
expenses all in one place. - Sprinkler System Valve Manual TemplateA
sprinkler system can be complex with many
different zones and valves. Some of those valves
may be easily to locate. Others may be in more
obscure locations. If there is an inadvertent
sprinkler activation, or when maintenance or
system modifications are being performed, it is
imperative that sprinkler system valves be
properly identified and can be quickly
located. -

- Advocacy
- Recent ASHE advocacy actions include
- Re-engineering the Standard for Health Care
Facilities (NFPA 99) - Gaining relief from stringent run hour
limitations in EPAs Generator standard - Defeating the NFPAs proposal for annual testing
of fire and smoke dampers - Currently (CMS Fire/Smoke damper test waiver)
- Improving health care practitioners hand hygiene
and reducing infections through collaboration
with CMS, JCAHO, CDC, APIC, ICC, and NFPA to
amend fire safety codes to allow widespread use
of alcohol hand-rubs
16ASHEs Major Accomplishments
- Advocacy
- ASHE advocacy efforts defeated the 1999 NFPA
proposal to retroactively require all hospitals
to have a complete sprinkler system. - Had it been passed it would have cost millions
for nearly every hospital in America to
retroactively install a fire sprinkler system
throughout the entire facility. - It's estimated that in the past 30 years, ASHE
has saved healthcare facilities approximately 62
billion in direct capital costs for compliance
with a number of standards and regulation-making
bodies!

27ASHE July 31-Aug. 1st Board Meeting Summary
- Dual Membership Fees
- The board discussed the potential loss of
hospital based members who are faced with the
decision to belong to ASHE or to the local
chapter. Members have reported that their
facility will only fund membership in one
professional organization putting them in a
position where they must choose and, as a result,
both ASHE and the local chapters are losing
members. An option to assist members pay once by
including both national and chapter dues in a
single payment was explored. - ASHE/AHA and the Green Initiative The
American Hospital Association has ask ASHE to
participate in a series of webinars marketed to
healthcare facility CEOs. ASHE work on energy
efficiency/sustainability was a major driver in
this request. - ASHE Education Foundation The board is
investigating the option to expand the scope of
the ASHE Education Foundation to include
research. - Clinical/Biomedical Engineering Constituency To
assist the societys clinical/biomedical
engineering constituency , ASHE will be
initiating conversation with the Association for
the Advancement of Medical Instrumentations.
