  • Table 2

4
The brief analysis
  • The main reason is that the students are lack of
the motive for keeping on learning.
  • It is universally true that the stronger the
motivation, the more quickly a person will learn
a language. So to inspire the students with
motivation in their learning process is vital in
    language teaching.

5
II. The structure of motivation
  • 1. Gardners social-educational model
  • The implement type Learners are learning just
for some practical goals, such as for passing the
exams, promoting to a higher post, or finding a
    good job.
  • The integrated type Learners are interested in
the language itself. They want to know more about
the target language culture, and even want to
experience the life of that culture. The
integration type is helpful for achieving success
    in learning.

6
II. The structure of motivation
  • 2. Harters model
  • Extrinsic motivation Students are learning just
for the awards. The students who have higher
extrinsic motivation may lose their interest and
confidence in learning if they fail to be
    awarded.
  • Intrinsic motivation Students are learning for
the language itself. They are interested in
learning and can get joy from it.

7
III. The factors that affect studentsmotivation
  • 1. The intrinsic motivation
  • 1) For safety Students want to get safety from
the learning environment, the tasks and the
attitude of the teacher. They can achieve in
learning only when they feel safe.
  • 2) For the need of love Students need to be
loved and cherished by their classmates and
teachers they want to be received as a member of
    the class group.

8
III.The factors that affect studentsmotivation
  • 3) For respect Everyone needs respect, praise,
    and support from others.
  • 4) For research People have the desire to do
    research and solve problems.
  • 5) For self-fulfillment Students need to
experience the success, to confirm their ability,
and to bring their potential into play.

9
III. The factors that affect studentsmotivation
  • 2. The extrinsic motivation
  • 1) The expectation from the teachers and family
    members
  • 2) The education system
  • 3) The feedback from the teachers
  • Awards and punishment
  • The challenge of the tasks

IV.Strategies for motivating students
in online English teaching
  • 4.1. Self-determination strategy
  • It is natural for people to pursue freedom.
So in tutorials teachers should give students
    freedom as more as possible.
  • Letting students decide the procedure of class,
letting students choose the ways of learning
  • Encouraging students to share their ideas with
    others
  • Letting students judge themselves and take
    responsibility for themselves

11
4.2. The self-fulfillment strategy
  • 1) Letting students evaluate themselves
  • according to their own criterion
  • 2)Teaching students according to their different
  • aptitudes, and giving different help they need

12
4.3. The group-attachment strategy
  • Psychologically, everyone wants to belong to a
group. Nothing is more painful than living an
isolated life. Each tutorial acts like a
gathering for the online learners, and on
tutorials, learners have the same role the role
of student. The same role gives them the same
feeling they feel that they are in the same
group and they will reinforce the relationship by
insisting on learning. Then they have the strong
motivation for learning and wont leave school.

13
4.4. The self-esteem strategy
  • Self-esteem can make people be confident. When
online students make some mistakes, such as
forgetting to do the assignments, failing an
exam, tutors should help them accept the mistakes
and then help them find ways to solve the
problems. Tutors should have a positive attitude
towards students progress, no matter how little
    it is.

14
4.5. The willing to learn strategy
  • Motivating the students to learn willingly
  • (an example)
  • 2) Giving fresh and meaningful activities in
    tutorials.
  • A. Using different kinds of ways to organize
    the class
  • B. Giving new and fresh directions

15
4.6. The exterior reinforcement strategy
  • Both award and punishment are useful ways to
reinforce the students motivation of learning.
According to students different ages, sexes and
personalities, tutors have to use different
    methods to apply this strategy.

16
4.7. The feedback strategy
  • Everyone needs support from others. In tutorials,
the tutor should give his attention to every
student. After tutorials, tutors should contact
the students, in order that the students can find
the tutors at any moment. Remember give feedback
to the students as quickly as possible.
