Title: Operations of Japanese Elements of ISS

1
Operations of Japanese Elements of ISS
  • Chikara Harada
  • Mission Operations Manager
  • JEM Project Team
  • Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)

2
Japan's contributions to ISS programJapanese
Experiment Module
  • Japan has been participating in the International
Space Station (ISS) program since its early stage
with a straight forward policy to develop the
    Japanese Experiment Module (Kibo).

3
Japan's contributions to ISS programH-II
Transfer Vehicle (HTV)
  • The H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV) supplements the
Space Shuttle's role of transporting goods to the
ISS, which enables Japan to contribute further to
    the ISS program.

4
Japan's contributions to ISS programCentrifuge
  • To compensate for Kibo's launch by NASA's Space
Shuttle, Japan develops a Centrifuge (a life
science experiment facility) and deliver it to
US. This Centrifuge will be used in controlled
    experiments investigating the effects of
microgravity on animals and plants by providing
    an artificial gravity.

5
JAXAs Major Challenge in ISS Program
  • Integrated operations of the first Japanese human
    space system.
  • JAXA ISS system has many functions similar to
major functions in ISS core system.
  • JEM
  • Pressurized Module
  • Exposed Module
  • Logistic Module
  • Robot Arm
  • Airlock
  • Inter-satellite Communication System
  • Logistics Vehicle
  • JAXA will operate JEM system and its payloads
    from Tsukuba Space Center.

Conclusion
  • JAXA conducts JEM and HTV operations from Tsukuba
    Space Center.
  • JEM will be ready for launch soon at KSC.
  • JEM PM was transported to KSC
  • Multi-Element Integrated Test (MEIT)-III was
    completed.
  • JAXA will resume the JEM launch preparation as
    soon as possible.
  • JEM Operational preparation is going well.
  • Stage Integration Review (SIR) 11 for 1J/A and
    1J was completed.
  • SIR12 for 2J/A will be held in 2004.
  • Ground System Tests will be conducted in 2004.
  • JAXA will contribute to provide logistics flight
    to the ISS by HTV.
