Why do a needs assessment?

• Updated guidance in January 2009
• Support, and extend existing services
• Inform and sustain decisions on applications to
  provide services
• Highlight local needs and the pharmacy
  contribution to these
• Part of the World Class Commissioning programme

• Joint Strategic Needs Assessment already in
  existence
• High levels of health inequality across the Bay
  and worsening
• Existing PNA out of date (2005)
• Gentle nudge from the LPC!

Stage 1 - Mapping the baseline

• Local needs and priorities
• Increasing population, elderly care, chronic
  disease, deprivation, teenage conceptions,
  smoking, alcohol, obesity, cancer, emergency
  admissions, C diff, independence, learning
  disabilities and dementia
• Existing services capacity, quality, access and
  responsiveness, patient experience, choice,
  efficiency, premises, enhanced services
• What needs to change variable provision
  essential and enhanced services, patient
  experience feedback, wider choice, NHS ID

Stage 2 - Ambitions/Strategy

• Development of providers in areas of inequality
• Greater access to contraceptive, smoking
  cessation and alcohol services
• Young people friendly facilities
• Patient experience results
• Quality accounts/scorecards
• Zone/pharmacy links strengthened
