Water

• The human body is more than two-thirds water
• To replenish need to consume two liters a day
• It most basic component of our cells, supply
  system for nutrients and waste

The problem

• Water quantity and quality
• The demand on the resource from population
  increase is tremendous
• 70 of the population will living near the coast
• Today, our industrail and residential waste is
  still being dumped in the same water we drink.

The Clean Water Act

• The Federal Water Pollution Control Act. Was
  amended in 72 A.K.A. Clean Water Act.
• This act was formed to restore and maintain the
  chemical, physical, and biological integrity of
  the nations waters.
• This time in American history was characterized
  by massive fish kills because of increase
  untreated residential sewage and industrial
  dumping.
• The biggest indicator for action in the nation
  waters was the Cuyahoga river catching on fire
  from industrial waste and sludge.

Clean Water Act Section 404 permitting program

• The clean water act establishes a program to
  regulate the discharge of dredge and fill
  material into waters of the Unites States,
  including wetlands.EPA and the Army Corp of
  Engineer
• The primary permitting process is overseen,
  regulated and issued by the Corps of Engineers.
• The Corps of Engineer in making permit decisions
  will solicit the views of the public and State
  and Federal agencies.
• The EPA has the job of enforcement and they have
  the veto power over the Corp of Engineers if
  activities are not in the best interest of the
  surrounding water shed.

Closing

• The many problems facing our water supply in the
  years to come because of population increase and
  urban sprawl could be significant.
• However, the problem lies when more important and
  specific wetland types are not recognized.
• The Clean Water Act is only a tool for the states
  to prevent water degredation
• These system get developed on or paved over no
  help for the non-point source pollution.
