People injured people killed
  • There were a lot of people injured and
    unfortunately some were killed because of this
    quake. Approximately 9,000 people were injured
    and 51 dead. Some deaths were caused because the
    homes weren't strong enough to go through the
    Northridge earthquake. This event happened some
    where around 430 am and it was on January
    17,1994 (Martin Luther King JR).

  • As you all can see many people were hurt and
    not just in a physical way but also in economic
    and that is why even more people were hurt. Many
    people lost their homes and they took the people
    to a park and they slept in the gym. Also many
    people were shocked how a 20 sec. Earthquake
    could do so much damage. Many people helped the
    other people.

Buildings destroyed/damaged
  • There were many damages that were caused by the
    earthquake. Some costs were
  • 44billion in damage
  • 30billion in received in federal private
    insurance funds
  • 800 billion replacement value on taxable
    property
  • 25,000bwellings uninhabitable
  • 7,000 buildings red tagged
  • 22,000 buildings yellow tagged
  • 9 hospitals closed(2,500 beds lost)
  • A parking garage collapsed
  • High ways /bridges/ ports
  • Portions of 2 major roads into LA had to close

Buildings destroyed/damaged
  • Many building destroyed and houses,
    especially hospitals. Some were around 9
    hospitals were closed and more than 2,000 beds
    lost. Some places like Balboa bl. Were on fire
    because of the water pipes and gas pipes.

  • Some freeways were damaged and some were not,
    some collapsed also. Some people no were to live.
    Pore people suffered so much. Like how I said
    before the good thing was that people did helped
    and a lot.

Broken communication/ transportation
  • Many people didnt communicate after the
    earthquake because the phones didnt work. Also
    some train tracks were ruined and also tracks
    and many cars too.

  • What were some of the stuff you experience?
  • Well it felt very awful and it also scared me
    very much I felt like I couldnt move at all
    except for the quake moving me. Mostly every
    thing that decorated my house broke or got
    damaged, I was really upset.
  • How did u react to it?
  • one thing I didnt do was panic and then my
    husband and I went out of the house and got in
    the car. We stayed in there until we thought it
    was safe to come out.
  • What were you doing when the earthquake struck?

  • I was getting up to go to work, and then my
    husband woke up when it started to shake.
  • Who was with you?
  • My husband was with me, and so was my sister wit
    her daughter and her husband.
  • what did you do after?
  • i went inside the house and mostly every thing
    was broken. I changed and sadly I had to go to
    work.

  • Would you like to tell me some thing else?
  • Latter on I saw on TV that a building that was
    destroyed completely trapped a man that was
    cleaning the parking lot and died, also on
    freeway (14) broke down and a police man died.

  • What is an important thing you would say about
    this event?
  • Help came fast to the people who needed it most
    and they didnt just waste time.
  • What did you think/do when you saw how many
    people and buildings got affected?
  • I thought it was terrible because so many
    people got hurt and worried that my family would
    be ok.
  • What were you doing?
  • I was awake because my wife had to go to work
    and the alarm went on.
  • What ere some of the stuff you experienced?
  • I experienced an earthquake and also the fear
    and sort of nervous.

  • Who was with you?
  • I was with my wife. When we went out side we
    saw our neighbors and some of our family members.
    What was good was that we helped each other and
    not so many people panicked.
  • What did you do after the earthquake?
  • I tried to call my family members but I
    couldnt because the phones didnt work.
  • What did you fear the most?
  • Well what I feared the most was that my wife
    was waiting for a baby. Also the aftershocks from
    the earthquake.
  • Would you like to tell me something else?
  • Thanks to god my wife got to have our baby and
    there was no problems.also my family was ok, no
    one got hurt.
