Antoine Lavoisier (1743-1794)

• Often referred to as the Father of modern
  chemistry.
• Explained the chemical basis of combustion
  (fire).
• Explained that oxygen chemically combined with
  substances when they burned.
• He burned a lot of things then weighed them
