  • Greatest naval power of the Mediterranean in the
    third century B.C
  • While Rome was making an empire in Italy,
    Carthage was making one in North Africa.
  • Had tremendous wealth from Spain.
  • Before the Punic Wars neither side felt
    threatened by the other.
  • Carthage controlled Sicily and when they revolted
    Rome intervened and the first Punic War erupted.

  • Romans utterly destroyed their navy.
  • War ended with no particular side winning the
    war.
  • Carthage lost Sicily and had to pay Rome for the
    cost of the war.

  • Hannibal attacked Saguntum and conquered it.

  • Carthage refused and Hannibal marched his army

    the war.
