• Greatest naval power of the Mediterranean in the
  third century B.C
• While Rome was making an empire in Italy,
  Carthage was making one in North Africa.
• Had tremendous wealth from Spain.
• Before the Punic Wars neither side felt
  threatened by the other.
• Carthage controlled Sicily and when they revolted
  Rome intervened and the first Punic War erupted.

The First Punic War 264-241 BC

• Concentrated entirely on the island of Sicily.
• Romans utterly destroyed their navy.
• War ended with no particular side winning the
  war.
• Carthage lost Sicily and had to pay Rome for the
  cost of the war.
• Rome seized the island of Corsica.
• Seemed unethical and rash.

• Carthage expanded its empire in Spain.
• Couldnt expand over the Ebro River.
• Hannibal attacked Saguntum and conquered it.
• Rome attempted diplomacy.
• Carthage refused and Hannibal marched his army
  across Europe and in 218 entered northern Italy.

• Quintus Fabius Maximus to become dictator of Rome
• The Delayer didnt want direct confrontation
  with Hannibal
• Ousted and the Roman consuls sent an army of 8000
  who was promptly crushed.
• Greece then alligned with Hannibal.

• Hannibal couldnt take any one city.
• Just went along the countryside and laid waste to
  it.
• 211 marched right up to the walls of Rome.
• Scipio conquered Spain and left Hannibal high and
  dry.
• Then laid seize to Carthage itself.
• Hannibal never lost a battle but he failed to win
  the war.
• Rome won against overwhelming odds.
