1
Adding Sound and Animation to Your PowerPoint
Multimedia Presentation
2
Why Animation and Sound?
  • Animation can emphasize information
  • Animation can keep your presentation fresh in the
    minds of the viewer
  • Sound can set a mood
  • Sound FX can emphasize an idea or word

3
Problems
  • Too much animation can make a presentation look
    cheep!
  • Too much movement of text and pictures can
    confuse the viewer
  • Sounds can interfere with the message of the
    presentation
  • Some sound FX can be irritating

4
Types of Animation
  • Animation from one slide to another is called a
    transition.
  • Objects, including text, can be animated during a
    slide
  • Objects are animated on entry or exit or both.

5
Rules for Animation
  • All transitions should be the same
  • All animation of text should be the same
  • Animation of objects should be different than
    text
  • Having an object appear without movement is still
    considered animation

6
How to Animate
  • Under the menu Slide Show you can choose
    pre-set animation or custom animation
  • You can also right click on an object to bring up
    the custom animation option

7
Animation Screen
  • The animation screen shows all the objects
    (including text) on a page.
  • Choose an object and select an animation. Some
    have entry and exit options.
  • Pay attention to how the animation is started.
Keep it simple with a mouse click or make it more
complex by adding automatic timing have fun and
    experiment.

8
Transitions
  • From the Slide Show menu you can specify a
transition for each or every slide.
  • Transitions will either start automatically or
require a mouse click or an arrow key

9
Sound
  • Sound can be applied to either an entire show, a
slide, a serieses of slides, or an event (Sound
    FX)
  • Sounds can be CD Audio, WAV files or MP3
  • PowerPoint can play specific track from a CD.

10
Controlling Sound
  • Add sounds from the insert menu
  • Control sounds from the animation screen
  • Slide show sound options are controlled from the
    Slide Show menu.

11
Taking Your Show With You
  • Sounds (except sound FX) are separate files that
are linked to your slide show.
  • If you save your slide show, but not you CD files
or MP3s, your show will play, but will be missing
    the sounds.

12
Your Assignment
  • Add animation to several objects of your slide
    show.
  • Add a couple of sound effects
  • BONUS, design your slide show to be self playing
    with background music
