Proven Ways to Improve Your childs Studying
  • Many ideas will be presented...
  • Your student may not do them all, but the more
    the better!

17
Chart actual hours of studying and other
activities
  • A time management technique
  • A way to find more hours for studying

18
Create a Chart Listing
  • How much time does your child expects to do
    everything
  • Studying
  • Sleeping
  • Socializing

19
Study one subject in the same way a maximum of
one hour at a time
  • Students can study for several hours, but they
need to switch subjects or study methods.
  • Examples
  • taking a self-made practice test
  • reviewing lecture material
  • Make flash cards
  • Summarize

20
The learning curve
  • Your child learns the most in the first 30
minutes they start studying. It goes downhill
    after that.
  • After 3-4 hours of studying the same material in
the same way, they are learning virtually
    nothing.
  • Solution Keep switching
  • subjects, study styles.

21
Keep a planner
  • List all classes, assignments, due dates.
  • Never cram---This is the most ineffective way to
    study
  • Plan ahead and build in study time to your day

22
Notetaking
  • Note key points on left side of page
  • Write regular notes on right side
  • Divide the page into two columns
  • Right side for content
  • Left side for key words and concepts
  • Summarize page in your students own words at the
    bottom
  • Dont take too many or too few notes
  • If teacher puts something on the board or repeats
    it, write it down

23
Mind-Mapping
  • For people who think visually
  • Put central idea in middle circle
  • Add additional ideas in circles coming off the
center circle, like the spokes of a wheel
  • Draw pictures

24
Study Groups
  • Everyone can bring sample quizzes or questions
    with the answers
  • By explaining a concept to another person, your
students mind will process the material more
    thoroughly

25
See Your Teacher for Help
  • Students need to let teachers know they are
    confused about something
  • Use tutorial or have your student ask teachers
when they will be available ie after school
  • Go with specific questions or problems
  • Teachers are here for your children, dont
hesitate to let them know help is needed.
  • Have your students stay ahead of the teacher in
    the book!

26
Learn Material Many Ways
  • Your students should try
  • Study groups
  • Quizzing themselves
  • Make up trial exams
  • Write what they know
  • Say what they know
  • Explain what they know
  • Use flashcards
