Title: What is Algebra

1
What is Algebra?
  • An Introduction to Algebra
  • By Ms. Meichenbaum

2
What is a variable?
  • A variable is a letter used to represent a
number. Sometimes a variable can represent a
range of numbers if more than one number could
    work in the given problem.

3
Why use x?
  • Although most textbooks and worksheets use the
letter x as a variable, other letters can be
used to represent time t, velocity v, height
    h, etc.
  • Some letters to stay away from using as
    variables
  • O, It looks like a zero (0).
  • Lower case L, It looks like a one (1).
  • Upper case i, It looks like a one (1).
  • Only use z if you put a line through the middle
so as not to confuse it with a two (2).

4
When is algebra the way to go?
  • In earlier grades, you used to have worksheets
that asked you to solve for ? or an empty box.
That was algebra! Instead we use letter
variables like x to represent the numbers
  • Word problems have a lot of information.
Some-times it is easier to organize what you
have/need using a variable to represent the piece
of information for which you are solving.

5
Tips to Remember
  • Dont let Algebra scare you!
  • Math is a language and like any language you need
to practice to be good at it.
  • Practice makes perfect! So stay on track with
    assignments and homework!

6
If you get stuck
  • The worst thing you not ask for help and fall
behind. If you feel you are lost, ask for help
    from
  • Me
  • A friend who understands the material
  • An after-school tutor
  • Or anyone you trust who helps you but doesnt
give you the answers without building your
    understanding of the material.
