Title: Sustainability Program

1
Sustainability Program
  • Aspen Institution-based Ranking

2
Samples
  • 20082008 Beyond Grey Pinstrips Ranking 50
    Universities
  • Including U.S., Canada, Europe-based Universities
    with Sustainability program

3
Features
  • Independent Program
  • Research Center-oriented Program
  • Course-oriented Program
  • Through the research, largely above 3 types of
programs were found in accordance with funds,
namely the size of school, faculty and
    differentiation strategies of each school.

4
Features (Cont)
  • European (IE, Notre Dame, etc.) Univ. provide
limited content of the program through the
website and less strong interest than those in
    U.S.
  • Canada (West-Ontario, Calgary, York, etc.) Univ.
show a stronger concern on the sustainability
than Europe-based ones providing various degree
program and more interdisciplinary than U.S.
Based Univ., not much more focusing on Business
    perspectives.

5
Conclusion
  • The higher it ranks in Aspen Institute research,
the more universities tend to have a
    center-oriented program.
  • After 30th ranked program, there is no strong
distinction among the program and show the
    course-oriented program.
  • Universities which attempt to raise their
reputation as a differentiated strategy using
sustainability program tend to show an
    independent sustainability program, which means
    no research center.

6
Research Center-Oriented
  • Some have not only their independent program like
MS in environmental management, MBA in
sustainability but also their research centers
which constitutes several program such as forest,
    environment engineering, law.
  • Provides dual degree-program which requires
applicants to meet two conditions like GMAT GRE

7
Course-oriented Program
  • Hard to pick up their characteristics out of the
    program because sustainability programs are
incorporated into many types of different
    classes.
  • Have a sustainability program as a selective
    course.
  • The program is usually designed and operated by
the college unit (i.e. college of business), not
    the independent research center

8
Independent Program
  • Has its independent degree program. For
    instance, MS in environmental management
    sustainability (IIT), Master of Environment
management, not as a selective course.
  • Portland State Univ.(MBA), IIT,

  • Highlighted Sessions
  • Green vs. Greenwashing Environmental Strategies
of BusinessesMany businesses try to balance
    commercial, environmental, and social objectives
but risk being accused of only superficially
caring about the environment for PR purposes. In
this session, participants look at this challenge
using a case study that helps them understand how
environmental strategies can be both pragmatic
    and authentic.
  • Environmental Sustainability and the Supply
ChainToday's supply chains require a new set of
    capabilities agility, adaptability, and
alignment. These concepts are tightly coupled
with the impact of environmental sustainability.
This session will examine how to attain these
capabilities and how they can be applied in your
    supply chain.
  • High-Profile Activism Media and BoycottsAn
important aspect of business strategy involves
    managing the "non-market" environment of
activists, interest groups, and the media. In
this session, participants examine how and why
high-profile activism shapes firms, and how firms
    can manage these pressures effectively.

of specialization options. This provides students
with the necessary broad background in all
functional areas of business, with the added
benefit of a concentration that is flexible and
can include electives beyond the business
schools curriculum. Electives will be selected
from courses offered by the School of Business
Administration or may, with the approval of the
Director of Graduate Programs, be selected from
areas outside the School of Business

Duke (26)
  • The pursuit of sustainable corporations will
    ultimately require environmental, policy, and
    business professionals who are knowledgeable
about the opportunities and challenges of
corporate sustainability. Part of the Corporate
Sustainability Initiatives mission is to help
train the next generation of policy and business
    leaders in corporate sustainability through
various educational programs offered at Duke
University. CSI serves as coordinating mechanism
to help leverage the vast educational resources
at Duke including our top ranked Fuqua School of
Business and Nicholas School of Environment.
  • Training in corporate sustainability requires
joint expertise in environmental management and
policy and business strategy. CSI helps support
    Duke's joint MBA/MEM degree a three-year
program where students spend a year of intensive
study at both the Fuqua School of Business and
the Nicholas School of the Environment with a
third year spent completing electives from
throughout the University. CSI plans to sponsor a
number of activities including a lecture series
and socials to encourage interaction and learning
    among students within the program.
