Title: JOURNEY THROUGH THE UNIVERSE

1
JOURNEY THROUGH THE UNIVERSE
By Lance Rhodes
2
BLACK HOLES
3
  • Black holes attract everything near it, including
light, and anything that goes in, sometimes never
    comes out.
  • Black holes are caused by gravitational collapse.
  • Gravitational collapse is the final stage in the
    life history of certain stars.

4
THE MILKY WAY
5
  • The Milky Way is home to our solar system and at
    least 200 billion stars.
  • The Milky Way is one of only three spiral
galaxies in the galactic cluster, Local Group
  • The Milky Way Galaxy rotates just like our solar
system, with the objects nearest to the center
    orbiting the center fastest.

6
THE ASTEROID BELT
7
  • An asteroid is a rocky body in space which may
only be a few hundred feet wide or it may be
    several hundred miles wide.
  • The asteroid belt is a field of many asteroids
that orbit the sun in the region Mars and
    Jupiter.
  • Asteroids are often referred to as minor planets
    or planetoids.

8
  • The asteroid belt is slightly elliptical but
still circles in the same direction as the
    planets.
  • An asteroid as capable of colliding with a planet
resulting in the formation of an impact crater.

9
COMETS
10
  • A comet is a astronomical body of small mass
moving about the sun in a more or less elongated
    orbit.
  • There are 120 comets known as the Jupiter family
because they have aphelia that are located close
    to the orbit of Jupiter.
  • Comets are generally classified according to the
size and shape of their orbits, as either
    long-period or short-period objects.

11
HUBBLES WORLD
12
  • The Hubble Space Telescope was built from 1978 to
1990 at the cost of 1.5 billion.
  • In 1990, Hubble was transported into orbit by
Space Shuttle Discovery in shuttle mission STS-31.
  • The Hubble Space Telescope receives annual
    servicing missions from NASA.
