The Goal
  • To understand the Japanese culture of Amy-Chan.
    Create a list of questions to ask the class, then
    try to answer questions posed by peers.

Objective
  • I will read Dance Dance Amy-Chan to the class.
    After I have read them the book they will receive
    a copy on their own to take home and read. They
    will then compile a list of 5 questions to ask
    the class about the Japanese culture.

Materials
  • The book Dance Dance Amy-Chan

Time Allotment
  • Two days

Procedure
  • Have the students sit in a circle around the
    teacher and listen to the story. After the story
    is read allow the children time to sit at their
    desks and write down questions they have about
    the Japanese culture. After the students have all
    created a list of five questions they will be
    asked to present their questions to the class.
    Each student will pick a question they think is
    most interesting. They will be asked to go home
    and try to answer their question. The next day
    the students will tell the class the answers they
    found to the questions they chose.

Anticipatory Set
  • I will play Japanese music when the students
    arrive and have pictures of traditional dress in
    the classroom.

Modeling
  • I will ask the students a question about Japanese
    culture and see if they can answer it. After the
    students have thought about the answer for a
    minute or two I will provide a detailed answer to
    the question.

Monitoring and Adjusting
  • I will collect the students questions to make
    sure that they have completed the assignment. I
    will also collect the answers they found to the
    question they choose.
  •

Guided Instruction
  • When questions are asked in class I will have a
    book on Japanese culture there for reference.

Independent Practice
  • The students will be asked to research answers to
    the question they chose. They will do this at
    home as homework.

Closure
  • The students will be asked to write a short essay
    on what they learned about Japanese culture and
    what they found interesting. They will hand this
    in for a grade.
