Genocides in History
  • Presentation by
  • Roy Arguello and Gabriel Mateos

2
General Meaning of Genocide
  • Genocide is a broad term but basically means the
extermination of a religious, ethnic, national,
or cultural group. Genocide can also include
death without fair trial. An example of this
would be soldiers picking random people, lining
them up, and shooting all of them.

3
Genocide Facts
  • From the fifth till the twentieth century, 102
million fell victim to genocide or murder. From
1900 through 2001, 174 million were victims of
genocide. Including all wars, over 133 million
were murdered from 1900 through 2001. This was so
because of the worlds population. The world
population was about 400 million in the fifteenth
century, to 1.2 billion in 1900, and to 6.2
billion by mid-2001. If all the people murdered
from 1900 to 2001 were placed head to toe, the
chain would go around our planet about four times.

4
Genocide in the Soviet Union
  • One of the worst cases of genocide in history
took place in the Soviet Union (Russia and areas
near it) where the rulers Lenin and Stalin killed
about sixty-two million citizens and other
foreigners. The number of people murdered is
equal to the current population of three of the
largest states in the U.S., California, Texas,
    and Florida.

5
Communist China
  • With two power-abusing rulers in China, Mao
Tse-Tung and Chiang Kai-Shek (they ruled at
separate times), were responsible for killing
about fifty million Chinese people from
1923-1949. This was the second-worst case of
genocide in history however most people dont
    know that this ever happened.

6
The Holocaust
  • Led by Adolph Hitler, Nazi officers killed nearly
six million European Jews in death camps where
they worked to death, were gassed to death (gas
was a popular form of death, there were others),
or died from disease. During the and after the
time of the Holocaust (1940s), nearly 21 million
Jews around the world were murdered because of
the ideas put into their heads by Hitler and his
    propaganda.

7
Less Significant Genocides
  • Many genocides have happened throughout history
however some were under ten million deaths.
Previously listed genocide cases were above ten
million deaths. Genocide cases under ten million
deaths include Japan, 1937-1945, six million
killed, Cambodia, 1975-1979, two million killed,
North Korea, 1942-2002, over two million killed,
Rwanda, 1994, 750,000 killed, and Vietnam,
1945-87, 1.7 million killed. Such a thing as
genocide would not happen often today in 2007, as
the ICC (International Code Council) passed many
laws outlawing mass murder in 2003.
