  • Year 2 Recommendations

3
Math Teacher Survey Results
  • 28 teachers completed the survey
  • Classroom teachers, Spec Ed teachers
  • 96 used new materials daily or almost daily
  • Exceptions included Spec Ed, other settings,
special programs, testing, art/library days etc.

4
Math Teacher Survey Results
  • 75 believe materials help students learn math
    better than the old materials
  • 2 of 7 negative responses were spec. ed.
  • 3 of 7 negative responses were elementary
teachers indicating it is the same material,
    just the new version.

5
Math Teacher Survey Results
  • 61 supplement rarely or once a week
  • 2 teachers responding daily were spec ed.
  • High school teachers supplemented regularly with
the previous curriculum, but rarely or once a
    week with the new materials.
  • Middle school math teachers supplement rarely
    with the new materials.

6
Math Teacher Survey Results
  • 54 believe they will cover all required material
    this year
  • Middle and high school teachers cited the
transition to new materials was challenging.
They expect more coverage next year.
  • Elementary teachers found pacing calendars to be
    necessary to cover the curriculum.

7
Math Teacher Survey Results
  • 68 identified weak areas in the material
  • No weaknesses cited by senior high teachers
  • A Middle school teacher identified math facts as
a little weak and recommended some
    supplementation
  • Some elementary teachers cite weaknesses in math
facts, some alignment holes to MCA tests, and
    mastery/spiraling issues.

8
Parent Survey Results
  • 167 parents responded to the survey
  • 41 of responding parents did know the math
    program was changed or updated
  • 17 of parents claim they like the change, 28
claim they did not like the change

9
Elementary parent survey results
  • 72.9 of parents believe their child is
    successful in math this year
  • Some parents believe there is no extra help
    available for struggling students
  • Difficulty helping with new math techniques
    (algorithms)
  • Pacing is too fast
  • My child is not just learning computation skills
in math, she is learning thinking skills and
number sense. She has an overall knowledge in
math that cannot be learned with traditional math
    methods alone

10
MS Parent Survey Results
  • 37.5 parents feel their child is successful in
    math this year
  • Academic expectations have finally been raised
at the middle school so it is not an academic
    wasteland
  • The curriculum challenges students to think at a
    higher level
  • Some parents also believe their child does not
    receive individual help
  • The way math had been previously taught has
allowed students to fall through the cracks

11
HS Parent Survey Results
  • 56.1 of parents feel their child is successful
    in math this year
  • Some parents feel the pacing is too fast
  • Some parents believe class sizes are too big
  • The math is challenging, appropriate, and has
    real world practicality
  • Some parents also believe their students do not
    receive individual help

12
Vision Statement
  • Students in the Cloquet school district will
be involved in meaningful math daily in order to
be prepared for state testing, post secondary
training, and applications of mathematics in
    everyday life.

13
Mathematics Goal 1
  • State Standards All students should be
prepared for and pass the state grade level math
    tests.

14
Goal 1 Recommendations
  • All teachers teach the Cloquet math standards and
have formative and summative assessments that
    meet those standards.
  • Course content will align with MCAII as defined
    by the test specifications.
  • Continue to use MAP and AimsWeb testing data as a
    longitudinal evaluation for grades 3-9.
  • Working towards the goal
  • Done
  • Done

15
Mathematics Goal 2
  • Research-based Instruction Instruction will
accommodate varying learning styles and academic
    abilities.

16
Goal 2 Recommendations
  • More time required
  • More time required
  • Needs work, opportunities outside school
    available
  • Differentiated instruction based on diagnosed
assessment will be used in all classrooms.
  • Use of projects in the classroom to allow student
    choice, individualization, and self assessment.
  • Teachers will provide challenging activities
beyond the regular curriculum for students who
    perform above classroom expectations.

17
Mathematics Goal 3
  • Remediation Students will be given
    opportunities supporting successful participation
    in their current math class.

18
Goal 3 Recommendations
  • None added
  • Currently no
  • Limited at MS,HS. Limited Title at elementary
  • Implement after school programs
  • Resource room/pull-outs parallel to regular
    education classroom math objectives
  • Remediation in addition to regular math
    coursework through funded programs (LET)

19
Goal 3 Recommendations
  • MS only
  • Done
  • Initial stages
  • Indian Education staff provide support in the
    math classroom during class time.
  • If possible, assign students needing remediation
to a math teachers study hall
  • Implement a student based tutor program

20
Remediation Recommendations
  • Help kids on an individual basis and develop
    additional tutor programs
  • Support block effective when utilized, time for
    restructuring needed. Elementary navigator
    staffing during block time
  • Alg. Lab is in place for next year. MS navigator
    staffing?
  • Students must have individual needs met while
staying on pace for high school graduation
    requirements.
  • More small group teacher contact and hands on
learning accomplished by restructuring Title 1
and special ed. support for math, and by
    implementing support block time for
    differentiating instruction.
  • In grades 6-12, this can be accomplished by
    providing students with remedial opportunities
    concurrent with grade level work.

21
Mathematics Goal 4
  • Staff Development/Instructional Training All
staff will receive appropriate staff development
    in the math subject area.

    essential to student learning.
  • More time needed on in-service days
  • Initiated this year

24
