• Diesel engines emit large quantities of
  particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides
  (NOx). Diesel powered vehicles account for
  nearly half of all nitrogen oxides and more than
  two-thirds of all particulates.

• Diesel exhaust is a probable human carcinogen and
  the California EPA estimates 450 out of every
  1,000,000 Californians are at risk of developing
  cancer due to diesel exhaust exposure.
• Occupational health studies of railroad, dock,
  trucking, and bus garage workers exposed to high
  levels of diesel exhaust over many years
  consistently demonstrate a 20 to 50 percent
  increase of lung cancer or mortality.

How Catalytic Converters Work

• The catalytic converter only works at a fairly
  high temperature, in a cold engine, the catalytic
  converter does almost nothing to reduce pollution
  in your exhaust.
• Catalytic converters in diesel engines do not
  work as well in reducing NOx, the diesel engines
  run cooler than a gasoline engine.
