5
The National Picture
  • The Problem
  • Colleges and universities that once offered
training and credentials for driver education
teachers no longer have such programs.
  • The baby boom echo has increased the 16-year-old
population in the last few years and will
    continue to do so.
  • Possibly by as much as 23 percent by the year
    2010.
  • Many states no longer have a specific unit or
department that is responsible for driver
    education.
  • As a result, there are no standards for driver
    education teachers.
  • Even in locations where are standards, many times
there is no supervision of those standards.

Mark V. Rosenker, Chairman, NTSBApril 1, 2006 to
the Chicago Tribune
  • NTSB is very concerned about the current DE
curriculum. We believe it does not adequately
prepare novice drivers for driving in todays
    traffic and must be revised.

7
Mark V. Rosenker, Chairman, NTSBApril 1, 2006 to
the Chicago Tribune
  • Get involved to save the lives of our teens. I
mean everyone from Feds, state and local
    officials to parents, guardians, teachers,
    mentors, teens and their friends

The National Picture
  • The Solution
  • A renewed interest in driver education.
  • ADTSEA (American Driver and Traffic Safety
    Education Association), DETA and other
    organizations fuel renewed interest through
    research, etc.
  • States adopting new and improved standards for
    driver education teachers/instructors (OR, WA,
    MD, VA, etc.).
  • States adopting graduated driver licensing
    programs.

10
Is Driver Education Worthwhile?
The alternative is to simply give up the desire
to train new drivers. This means that we declare
that the status quo is acceptable. However, this
also means we pass along the responsibility for
delivering death messages to parents 333 every
month, 75 every week, 10 every day. This is not a
highway safety program that would make me proud.

Changing Role of the LearnerThe Crux of the
Revised Teacher Preparation
  • Student Centered classroom activities will
prepare the student to have successful in-vehicle
    sessions.
  • The student will be responsible for knowing what
    is correct driving behavior.
  • Moving from Dependence to Independence
  • When the student attends the in-vehicle session,
he/she will be expected to demonstrate the
    correct behavior.
  • Concurrent Learning between Classroom and
    Behind-the-wheel
  • Peer to Peer transfer as part of the learning
    process.
  • Brain research reveals that long-term memory
develops when the learner is required to teach
    someone a newly learned behavior.
