Title: Long Division

1
Long Division
  • Liz Murphy
  • 3rd Grade
  • 9 yrs Old

2
Lesson Objective
  • At the end of this week long lesson the students
will be able to do long division problems while
getting great practice with there times tables.
The students will obviously have already had some
background in math and regular division.

3
Intro to Learning Activity
  • First I would start by introducing the lesson,
students today we will start long division it is
like regular division but with bigger numbers
involved, I would then go into further
explanation of how we were going to go about the
lesson plan. One of the ways I would get them
interested is by giving them fun examples, kind
of like mini stories. I would be able to write
word problems such as if Johnny had a certain
amount of money his mother gave him for the movies

4
Cont
  • and each movie cost a certain amount of money how
many tickets could he buy, so how many friends
could he bring. By giving them questions that
could really go on in their lives would get them
more interested then just giving them problems
like 50 /10? I would demonstrate how to pull
the numbers out of these word problems and then
teach them how to do long division.

5
Providing Information
  • One way I would be able to provide them with
information is through the use of the
    internet,http//www.coolmath4kids.com/long-divisio
    n/long-division-lesson-1.html is a great website
for the kids to go on and get a lot more
practice. Another web site to get additional
    help would be http//www. coolmath4kids.com/times-
    tables/times-tables-lesson-division-1.html,

6
Cont
  • if I gave them these web sites they would have
to go home and make use of them also. The kids
would be given study guides, like study guides
that provided them with more examples, and
further written explanation of how to step by
    step do long division.

7
Providing Practice
  • One of the things that can really help students
with long division is knowing there times tables.
I have found a site online where there are
flashcards that make it easier for them to study.
I would send them to this site during class and
tell them to practice at home as well
    http//www.coolmath4kids.com/times-tables/index.ht
ml. They would be able to use the Internet sites

8
Cont
  • I gave them and work on the sheets I will have
already made up with practice questions. They
would first work on this alone and then after a
while, come together and compare/work in groups
to finish or get help with anything they didnt
understand. This also gives them a chance to
help each other out and to show the ways of how
each other does it incase anyone still cant
    understand how to do it.

9
Knowledge of Results
  • After the students were able to successfully
complete a homework sheet without needing help I
would now be able to give them graded material or
mini in class assignments. If we were in class I
would walk around giving them positive feedback,
telling them what a good job they were doing and
    help them with whatever

10
Cont
  • problems they needed help with. When they would
do a homework assignment or take a test I would
write down the things they did wrong or where
they were getting mixed up each time. Again I
would be giving them positive feedback and
leaving little nice comments on the side. If
they needed help they would also be able to ask
    for extra help.

11
Reviewing the Activity
  • I would have the students write in their
notebooks how they felt about doing long division
and how important it was to them. I would write
them back and explain why they need to know how
to do long division and how much knowing how to
do it would help them. Again I would try and
give them real life examples to keep them
interested in doing long division. By having
them write to me and me writing them back on an
individual basis will really benefit their
    learning.

12
Method of Assessment
  • I will be able to assess the students by making
them do the graded material. I would have them
do homework that I would check all of their
quizzes and tests, and then I could see if they
understood the material or not, where some
students might be struggling and anyone who

13
Cont
  • does just completely not understand long
division. If needed I would take a student aside
and really try to help them learn the material,
addressing a student individually rather then in
a group can really help them better understand
    the lesson presented to them.
