2
The call for proposals -
  • The Context
  • Aims of Digital Libraries in the Classroom
  • Example project
  • What we are not looking for
  • Process points

3
THE CONTEXT
  • Digital Libraries in the Classroom builds on JISC
    NSF experience
  • It is an important component of JISC development
    work
  • Need to improve integration of technologies
    MLES/VLES, on-line learning materials, digital
    library materials, simulation, visualisation
  • Need to integrate the use of these in practice

4
The JISC Five- Year Strategy 2001-05
  • Promote innovation in the use of ICT to benefit
learning teaching, research the management of
    institutions
  • Improve staff student skills in the
exploitation of ICT, particularly in the use of
    the internet
  • Promote facilitate international collaboration
    in the exploitation of ICT
  • This programme will act as a catalyst for the
    rest of the sector

5
The Basics
  • Definition of classroom? not literal virtual
    classroom
  • UK US partnership in undergraduate teaching
see QA re. PG teaching HE lead but FE can be
    partners
  • Up to 1.5 M per project over three years but
projects will be five years duration 2002/03
2006/07 - need own project funds
  • Institutional commitment financial strategy
  • Existing courses
  • Technology learning
  • Evaluation lessons
  • The three Is Integration of technology
content Innovation in teaching learning and
    Institutional commitment

6
AIMS OF DIGITAL LIBRARIES IN THE CLASSROOM
  • To fund FOUR significant exemplar projectsthat
  • Help bring emerging technologies and available
digital content into core teaching learning
  • Use innovative approaches in integrating
technologies for the benefit of undergraduate
    teaching learning
  • Demonstrate how the pedagogical process needs
adapted or developed to support the learning
    process when using technology
  • Examine the organisational and human issues
associated with the new modes of teaching

7
EXAMPLE
  • This is an example
  • NOT a project we want to be done
  • there is no pre-conceived view of the perfect
project this a call for proposals not a
specification to be commissioned use your
    imagination

8
E.G. project scenario
  • University of Hambledon / University of
    Pimpleton, Mass.
  • Hambledon currently teaches Geography face to
face with on line communication tools to
    deliver U/G modules
  • Other departments have taken a similar approach
  • the university has funded some staff development
to use the teaching learning model

9
Project scenario
  • University has a partnership with Pimpleton,
    Massachusetts
  • Both Universities offer BA Humanities
  • Experience in Trans- Atlantic student
    communication
  • Now want to develop this further - virtual
    tutorial support, video conferences, shared
access to large datasets, real time tutorials
in using geo-spatial software, sharing learning
    objects
  • Underpinned by a single VLE connected to student
    tracking and information systems

10
Project scenario
  • Seek JISC NSF funds for
  • enable institutions to monitor changes to
institutional processes to deliver joint mixed
    mode teaching learning
  • to develop pedagogic models used to support
learning through the use of technologies to
    monitor impact
  • to adapt software for synchronous use across the
    internet for embedding learning objects
  • to build a back end tracking system based on
appropriate standards to support the course
  • see the web links to the full text of these
project scenarios but remember these are not
the only types of things that will be expected
    these are ONLY examples

11
What we dont want
  • NOT Digitisation projects content creation
  • NOT Projects to implement infrastructure
    acquire substantial software/hardware
  • It IS about innovation and change in the way in
which subjects are taught and knowledge created
  • minimal funds for additional metadata to
    disclose content
  • minimal funds for hardware software
  • infrastructure investment is the institutions
    responsibility

12
Some areas projects should consider
  • IPR
  • Sustainability
  • Standards
  • Skills development
  • Student teacher needs
  • Measurements capturing lessons
  • Embedding
  • Value the UK US partnership brings to the work

13
Processes
  • CFP at http//www.jisc.ac.uk/pub01/c07_01_sup.ht
    ml
  • Read it! - all of it!
  • Look at section 5.0 this section gives a good
indication of the types of things the reviewers
    will look for
  • Partner form http//www.dli2.nsf.gov/nsfjiscmatch
    .html
  • NOW FOR SOME REALLY GOOD NEWS

14
Good news
  • The deadline for proposals has been extended
  • AND NOW FOR SOME BAD NEWS...

15
Bad news...
  • We havent got a final date yet
  • BUT it will mean more time to find partners and
    to develop sound proposals
  • Indicative timetable change
  • Letters of intent to JISC NSF 15 April 2002
  • Full proposals to JISC NSF 15 May 2002
  • Money to institutions from October 2002
  • Final revisions will be circulated to JISC
ANNOUNCE posted on the web at
    http//www.jisc.ac.uk

16
Proposal submission
  • As stated in the supplementary information -
    joint proposal
  • NSF via FastLane
  • JISC to Alice Colban - hardcopy email
  • Core body of the proposal should be the same but
UK institutions dont need to give all the US
    specific information
  • Additional guidance will be posted on the web
once the NSF has released its call - which will
    be soon

17
The Panel - Questions and Answers
  • Derek Law (panel Chair)
