Midazolam

• Midazolam, like diazepam is a benzodiazepine
• Midazolam induces sleep and relieves anxiety,
  muscular tension and spasms
• Midazolam produces its effects quickly (initial
  effects visible approx 5 mins after buccal
  administration) and for a short period of time
  (duration of action up to 1 hour)
• Possible side effects respiratory
  depression(however less common than rectal
  diazepam restlessness/dazed(also seen with
  other benzodiazepines)

Administration of buccal Midazolam

• The client should ideally be lying on their side
  and the cheek used should be the one next to the
  floor. If they are seated either cheek can be
  used.

• 1. Use the syringe to draw up the prescribed
  amount of midazolam
• 2. Insert the syringe into the persons mouth
  between the cheek and teeth medicine is
  absorbed through the lining of the cheek
• Slowly push the plunger of the syringe down until
  the syringe is empty
• Ensure the syringe is disposed of safely
