- Next to salaries, utility costs are the largest
expense a school board has. - More is spent on energy than on computers and
books.

- 60 of a schools electricity consumption comes
from lighting. - Turning off unnecessary lights can reduce a
schools electricity costs by 30-40.

- On a sunny day, open the drapes or blinds and use
natural light where possible in the classroom. - Turn off lights when you leave the room.
- Use only as many banks of lights as you need for
any given task .

- Each Computer uses 100 in electricity per Year.
- Over 50 of that cost goes to powering the
monitor.

- Turn off computer screens and printers when you
are not using them. - Turn off computers at night and on weekends.

- In North America, more energy is used to power
electronics in the off mode than when in use. - Every kWh of electricity you avoid using saves
about 11/2 pounds of CO2 from being pumped into
the atmosphere.

Phantom loads" are things like the little lights
on a stereo or VCR or TV or coffee pot that stay
on when it is off. Among these "phantom loads"
the highest consumers are cable boxes, security
systems, dishwashers, older VCR's and TV's.

These loads cost the average house
- 450 kWh/year.
- At 10 /kWh that is 45/year.
- There are 4.3 million households in Ontario.
- That amounts to about 194 million dollars in
lost electricity costs a year in Ontario.
SoUnplug where you can, buy Energy Star where
you cant.

- Unplug any electrical equipment that is not in
use such as televisions, VCRs, tape players.

- Leaving the exhaust fan on overnight during the
heating season, accounts for 2,000.00 of your
school heating bill. - Opening windows and propping exterior doors open
during the winter months is also costly.

- Keep exterior doors closed during the heating
season. - Keep windows closed when the heat is on.

- Clear off radiators
- and heat vents
- Turn off exhaust fans in unoccupied periods
15Take charge
- Controlling energy use is key.

Always act in an environmentally conscientious
manner And Do, whatever you can, whenever you
can, to reduce Energy consumption, Water
consumption and Waste production
