  • Ideas for using
  • New Standard English Junior High books

2
  • I want to talk about how to make the most of what
    the book provides
  • New vocabulary
  • Grammar practice activities
  • Conversations
  • Reading texts
  • Pronunciation practice

3
But first I want to talk about Teaching grammar
4
A good textbook offers you fantastic help in
GRAMMAR PRACTICE. The TEACHER is the best guide
to new grammar. The STUDENTS can be ACTIVE
PARTICIPANTS in the grammar teaching process.
So lets have a grammar lesson!
5
Were going to look at Module 9 from New Standard
English Junior High Book 7B. So first, I want
to suggest some ideas for what to do BEFORE YOU
OPEN THE BOOK.
6
The theme is National heroes. The content
includes information about these people Zhan
Tianyou Yang Liwei Yuri Gagarin Mother
Teresa
7

You are Junior High students. Questions 1 Have
you heard of any of these people? 2 Would you
like to tell the rest of the class what you know?
8

Vocabulary gt Vocabulary provides you with
building blocks to build the lesson gt Where
possible, vocabulary is presented in lexical sets
groups of words that naturally go together
9

Very often, at the start of a new module there is
a vocabulary box. What do you do with it? 1 Open
the book and translate the words in order? 2 Try
to explain or describe the words in order? 3 Or
before you open the book, make mini-lexical sets
and present some of the new words?
10

At the beginning of JH 7B Module 9, the following
words appear in the vocabulary box bridge build
engineer foreign government museum national
hero patriotic railroad tunnel
11

Lets sub-divide this list and see how we can
teach these new words. Some of them go naturally
into groups, others will have to be taught
separately 1 bridge build engineer railroad
tunnel 2 national hero patriotic Others foreign
government museum
12

Teaching the new words in the first
set bridge build engineer railroad tunnel So
metimes, the words are illustrated in the book
itself. If not, it takes very little time to find
the images on the internet.
13
This is a bridge
14
This is a tunnel
15

This is a bit boring! Lets try something
DIFFERENT!!!
16

Maybe we can give the students more to do. We
can, for example, offer them a different set of
images which will make them THINK!
17

Todays big question What happens when this .
18

reaches this ???
19

The students will reply either (a) They build a
tunnel or (b) They build I dont know the
word b) is a wonderful way to learn a new word
you need it, and your lovely teacher supplies
it!!! ?
20

Make a note of this
21

1 Its good to do some new stuff before you open
the book you have the undivided attention of
the class. 2 Its always more interesting when
students see the word that they need in their
minds eye, and you tell them what the word
is! 3 You can have a lot of fun learning how to
pronounce these strange English words.
22

Close your books. This is a very important
instruction. Much more useful than open your
books. Why?
34

Make a note of this
35

1 During a lesson the focus changes
constantly. 2 Sometimes, the focus is on you,
the teacher, sometimes on the book, sometimes
the audio, sometimes the students themselves
working by themselves, or in pairs or groups.
36
  • 3 When you end a book activity, and you want
the class to listen to you again, tell them to
close the book.4 If you DONT, they will
continue reading they will only listen to
    you with one ear.

37
1 Start off with ideas that work for you and
your students. 2 Try to integrate skills in
your lessons 3 Emphasise the importance of
PRONUNCIATION take advantage of the
pronunciation practice in the book, especially of
WORD LISTS. 4 Offer the learner the chance to get
involved in all parts of the teaching process
including presentation of new grammar items. 5
Dont always do the same lesson. 6 Enjoy using
the book!
