Title: RESUME WRITING

1
RESUME WRITING AND THE COVER LETTER!
  • RESUME WRITING
  • First, you may be asked to submit a CV its
    the same as a resume.
  • We often use this term in the sciences.
  • Its also called a vitae.

2
  • Second, there may be two versions (later in your
    lives!)
  • A short version is typically one page.
  • It contains a limited selection of information.
  • The full version has everything!
  • There may even be a 3-page version, say.

3
  • Examplein your career, youve published seven
books and 32 journal articles, and have attended
45 conferences. You cannot put all this
    information in one page.
  • Instead, you might include everything youve done
in the last three years (say).

4
  • Well look at the example from the career center,
and in addition from the text (page 218)
  • Things to think about and things you should/might
    include
  • Identification
  • Objectives (read text!)

5
  • Goals short-term versus long-term.
  • Education (more important at the start of your
    career).
  • Maybe list your advisor if this is for an
    academic position.
  • Honors and awards.
  • Work experience.
  • Start with the relevant stuff!

6
  • Professional activities (AMS chapter).
  • THINGS YOU DO NOT INCLUDE
  • Age, marital status, wifes and kids names,
    political affiliation, church attended etc.
    personal information.

7
  • THINGS TO LOOK FOR
  • Format (appealing or annoying?)
  • Use reverse chronological order (newest _at_ top)
  • Spelling errors etc.

8
  • And for the graduate students, lets look at
