Title: MEASURING TO SCALE

1
MEASURING TO SCALE
2
How do we define scale?
  • A scale is a proportion or ratio
  • This proportion or ratio allows us to draw
objects either by reducing or enlarging them
    proportionally.
  • This allows us to show the relationship of all
the parts of an object or drawing.
  • Without scales we would not be able to draw
objects larger than a sheet of paper accurately.

3
Different types of scales
  • 1. Architects Scale
  • Are used for structures and buildings. They are
used to measure interior and exterior dimensions
such as rooms, walls, doors and windows.
  • Usually have the following dimensional
    relationships.

Different types of scales
  • 2. Engineers Scale
  • Are used for measuring roads, water mains, and
    other similar topographical features.
  • Usually have the following dimensional
    relationships

How is a scale read?
6
How is a scale read?
  • 1. Line up the zero mark on the scale selected
with the beginning of the item you wish to
    measure.

7
How is a scale read?
  • 2. determine at what point on the scale the end
of the item you wish to measure is.

8
How is a scale read?
  • 3. Read the number off the scale that is closest
to the ending point of the item measured.
  • ? Mentally note this number and be sure to
'round down' even if you are close to the next
    number.
  • ? This number represents the whole feet of
    the item you are measuring.

How is a scale read?
  • 4. Then slide the ruler so that the number you
noted mentally lines up with the end of the item
    being measured.

11
How is a scale read?
  • 5. Go back to the zero end of the scale. The
fractional feet to be measured will be
represented by the distance of the start point of
the object being measured to the zero point on
    the scale.
  • Take the reading from this part of the scale
(depending on the scale this may be graduated
smaller or larger than 1") and add this number
to the whole feet you mentally noted earlier.
