• Families, as well as communities, get caught in
  poverty traps

• Hunger
• There is no way out without help . . .

What is Adopt a Village?

• A program run through Rotary International, Adopt
  a Village focuses on the three main pillars of
  poverty in order to adequately address all the
  issues necessary in effectively ridding a village
  from poverty.
• The metaphor of a three-legged stool first used
  by Dr. Wangari Muta Maathai (Nobel Peace prize
  winner for sustainable development) is commonly
  used to describe the issues of health, hunger and
  education and how all are necessary for effective
  poverty relief.

Our Goal!

• 30,000-35,000 to completely rid a village of
  poverty forever hopefully!
• And . . . 33,000 students at Western so 1 per
  student!
• This is a great initiative for UWO to put their
  name to and it could catch on in years to come
  across different universities because of its
  feasibility and sustainability.
• Vision
• A rural community with reduced poverty, hunger,
  improved literacy and lessened incidences of
  preventable diseases.
• Mission
• To improve the general livelihoods of the 100
  families in the village through empowering them
  to practice basic community health care and
  promotion of sustainable land use, applying good
  soil management and water conservation techniques
  and integrated farming.

Why Katigondo?

• Uganda, located in East Africa, is one of the
  least developed countries with the majority of
  its population living under the poverty line.
• Despite government efforts to raise education
  levels, many people are still illiterate making
  the economic situation even worse.
• Primary means of food production is farming, yet
  there is generally little excess farm produce
  they can trade.
• Families make less than 200 US/year

Our campaign

• Rotaract will be posting fliers, presenting at
  meetings/classes, as well as spreading the word
  through CHRW, the Gazette, TV Western , Western
  Film, Purple Couch, etc.
• The Purple Ribbon Campaign
• Purple is for poverty (and Western!)
• Handing out ribbons in anticipation of
  Collection Week as well as handing out ribbons
  to those who donate the week of.
• Collecting money the week of March 16-20 in
  faculty buildings, the UCC, etc.

• Spread the word all across campus and encourage
  student participation. Western has a great
  student body so lets all work together!
• With you, Western can free a village from poverty!
