Test of Hypothesis for population proportion p

Large sample test of hypothesis for p (Critical
value procedure)

procedure)

  • Example 5
  • A professional basketball player used to make
only 55 of his free throw shots. Now the
players agent claims he has improved and wants
more money. The agent points out that the player
has make 40 of 60 free throw attempts this
    season.
  • Test whether the player has improved at
    significance level 0.05.

  • Example 6
  • In a July 2001 research note, the US Department
of Transportation reported the results of the
National Occupant Protection Use Survey. One
focus of the survey was to determine the level of
cell phone use by drivers while they are in the
act of driving a motor vehicle. Data collected by
    observers at randomly selected intersections
across the country revealed that in a sample of
1165 drivers, 35 were using their cell phone.
  • Conduct a test (at a0.01) with the p-value
procedure to determine if the true driver cell
phone use rate, differs from 0.02.

Exercise
  • 1. Examining data collected on 835 males from
the National Youth Survey, researchers at
University of Florida found that 401 male youths
were raised in a single-parent family. Does this
information allow you to conclude that more than
45 of male youths are raised in a single-parent
    family? Test at a.05
