• Maintenance partnership began in 1917
• 72 County Highway Departments
• State Highway System
• 11,437 center lane miles
• 33,531 lane miles
• 5,066 bridges

Maintenance on the State Trunk Network

• Size of county operations Varies from 1,789 lane
  miles in Milwaukee County to 90 lane miles in
  Menominee County.
• Activities include pavement and shoulder repair,
  roadside maintenance, sign repair, litter pick
  up, plowing and salting, emergency response and
  assistance.
• Daily work activities directed by five WisDOT
  Regional Highway Operations offices.
• County Highway Departments reimbursed for work
  performed (labor, equipment, materials) on the
  state highway system by monthly requisitions -
  plus 4.5 administrative fee.

De-icing Salt

• Purchased by WisDOT state bid and contract
• (local units of government can purchase salt
• from the state contract).
• Delivered and stored in state-funded salt storage
  facilities located at county garages.
• County responsible for loading delivered salt
  into storage facility and housekeeping at shed.
• County responsible for maintenance and repairs of
  salt sheds .

Speed Recovery Study

• Collect operating speed data from road sensors
• Correlate storm duration and intensity with
  winter operating speeds
• Preliminary data may assist in defining
  post-storm speed recovery targets
