2Components of a Disaster Recovery Solution
3The Seven Tiers of Disaster Recovery
Source Recovery Specialties (http//recoveryspeci
alties.com/7-tiers.html)
4VMWare Host Based Data Replication
DR SITE
PRIMARY
WAN
Source VMFS
Target VMFS
Source Heavily modified from VMWare Partner
Disaster Recovery Presentation, June 2007
5Host Based Data Replication
- Advantages
- Software-Based (Cheap)
- Quick to Implement
- No SAN required
- Flexible, able to add new features as new
software versions come out - More flexible
- Disadvantages
- May require several products
- VM Only or Product Specific
- Doesnt always support differential copy
- YAV (yet another vendor)
6VMWare Array Based Data Replication
DR SITE
PRIMARY
WAN or Dark Fiber
Source VMFS
Target VMFS
Source Heavily modified from VMWare Partner
Disaster Recovery Presentation, June 2007
7Array Based Data Replication
- Advantages
- SAN and recovery all-in-one
- Block-Level, both physical and virtual data can
be replicated with same process - Integration with many backup products like
Netbackup
- Disadvantages
- Can be spendy
- May or may not quiesce data
- Lock-In
- Vendor features vary wildly
- Requires SAN experience
- Replication is often not compressed (high
bandwidth requirements)
8VMWare Site Recovery Manager
- Newly Announced at VMWorld 2007
- Integration with Array (and maybe host?)
replication SAN vendors to automate recovery
processes and make recovery process easy(ier) - Not much info available now, ask again later!
9Thank you very much!
