Lets Start With The Basics
  • We need food to survive
  • Food is our body's source of Fuel building
    material
  • Through the process of metabolism the process
by which the cells of the body change food so
that it can be used for energy or to build or
    maintain cells
  • The body breaks down food into basic nutrients

Carbohydrates, protein and fats
3
The Key To Metabolism
  • IS THE HORMONE
  • Insulin
  • It is required for proper metabolism of
    Carbohydrates
  • Protein
  • Fats

4
How It All Works
  • Most of what we eat digest into glucose
  • When food is eaten the pancreas responds by
    producing insulin
  • Insulin carries the glucose into the cells
    tissues
  • The cells produce energy from glucose

5
How It Works When You Have Diabetes
  • 1- Your pancreas makes little or no insulin
    (insulin insufficiency)
  • or
  • 2- The insulin you have is not working the
    way it should (insulin resistance)
  • Sugar (glucose) cannot get into your bodys cells
and is trapped in your bloodstream
  • High Blood Glucose Levels

6
So.What is Diabetes?
  • A chronic illness where the body cannot convert
the food you eat into Energy

7
Prevalence

Types of Diabetes

Type 1
  • Sudden onset due to a triggering event (illness)
  • Genetic trait activated
  • Autoimmune destruction of pancreatic beta cells
    (insulin producing cells)
  • Usually occurs in children or young adults
  • All insulin producing cells are destroyed
  • Insulin is no longer secreted, insulin injections
    are required for survival

12
Signs Symptoms of Type 1
  • Increased thirst or hunger
  • Frequent urination
  • Rapid weight loss (even though eating normal)
  • Blurred Vision
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Itchy or dry skin

13
Type 2
  • More common form of diabetes
  • Caused by a combination of problems but usually
    begins with insulin resistance
  • Diagnosed over the age of 40
  • Family history of diabetes
  • Overweight
  • Consistently inactive
  • History of gestational diabetes or delivery of a
baby weighting more than 9 lbs
  • High Blood Pressure 140/90 or higher

    and Native Americans)

14
Signs Symptoms of Type 2
