2Lets Start With The Basics
- We need food to survive
- Food is our body's source of Fuel building
material - Through the process of metabolism the process
by which the cells of the body change food so
that it can be used for energy or to build or
maintain cells - The body breaks down food into basic nutrients
Carbohydrates, protein and fats
3The Key To Metabolism
- IS THE HORMONE
- Insulin
- It is required for proper metabolism of
Carbohydrates - Protein
- Fats
4How It All Works
- Most of what we eat digest into glucose
- When food is eaten the pancreas responds by
producing insulin - Insulin carries the glucose into the cells
tissues - The cells produce energy from glucose
5How It Works When You Have Diabetes
- 1- Your pancreas makes little or no insulin
(insulin insufficiency) - or
- 2- The insulin you have is not working the
way it should (insulin resistance) - Sugar (glucose) cannot get into your bodys cells
and is trapped in your bloodstream - High Blood Glucose Levels
6So.What is Diabetes?
- A chronic illness where the body cannot convert
the food you eat into Energy
7Prevalence

are required for survival

- Rapid weight loss (even though eating normal)
- Blurred Vision
