WINDOWS XP
  • the operating system that controls all hardware
    and software functions on the computer.

GRAPHIC USER INTERFACE
  • GUI-pronounced gooey
  • is a computer application that uses pictures,
    graphics, menus, and commands to help user
    communicate with their computers.

DESKTOP
  • The entire screen area, the area that displays
    windows and icons.

  • Labeled pictures along the left side of the
    screen which provide easy access to various
    aspects of Windows XP.
  • Icons can represent programs, commands or
    documents

TASKBAR
  • Displays the applications and documents that you
    are currently using.
  • The gray bar located along the bottom of the
    desktop

MOUSE TERMINOLOGY

MOUSE POINTER
  • moves on your screen when you move the mouse on
    your desk.

  • Point at means to move the mouse so that its
    on-screen pointer is positioned over the
    specified object and held in place for a few
    moments.
  • Click means to press and release the left mouse
    button
  • Double-click means to point at the object and
    click the left mouse button twice in rapid
    succession.

  • Drag means to point at the object, press (but
    not release) the left mouse button, move the
    mouse pointer to a new location, and then release
    the button.
  • Drop to release the mouse button to place the
    object in its new position.

Start Button
  • Located in the lower left corner of the taskbar
  • is the jumping off point for a typical Windows
    session. It provides access to all the
    applications (programs) installed on your
    computer.

  • Boxed-in area on the screen.

2 types of bars
  • Title bar displays the name of the window or
    the document in the window at top of screen -
    blue
  • Menu bar displays a list of the menus from
    which you can choose below title bar - gray

Control-Menu Icon
  • Accesses a menu that enables you to choose
    commands to control this window, including
    changing the window size, closing a window, and
    switching to a different window located on the
    left side of the title bar
