3
Background
  • CMRSA 7 10 are of concern in Alberta
  • Outbreak in 2004-05 resulted in the awareness of
    CA-MRSA
  • SES is frequently determined at aggregate level
    not at the individual level
  • Albertans currently pay health care premiums

4
Objective
  • To describe the relationship between
  • socio-economic status and Community Acquired
    MRSA cases in Alberta.

5
Methods
  • Cases
  • All new infections, among Alberta residents
less than 65 years, identified from laboratory
surveillance, as CMRSA 7 or CMRSA 10.
  • Between January 1, 2006-December 31, 2007

Methods-Subsidy levels

CMRSA 7 Rates by SES

9
Results CMRSA 7
  • The infection rate has increased for First
Nations over time across most age groups
  • The infection rate has not increased for other
    SES groups.
  • First Nations are over represented with a
    relative risk of 14.8 (95 CI 13.7-16.1) in 2007
compared to those receiving no subsidy

CMRSA 10 Rates by SES

(No Transcript)
12
Results CMRSA 10
  • The infection rate has increased for all subsidy
groups, with the age and gender distribution
    remaining the same.
  • First Nations and those on social assistance
    remain over represented
  • RR for First Nation 5.5 (95 CI 5.1-5.9)
  • RR for Social Assistance 6.4 (95 CI5.8-7.0)
  • compared to those with no subsidy

13
Strengths/ Limitations
  • Limitations
  • Omission of those gt65 years of age
  • Only two years of complete data
  • Strengths
  • Individual based SES measure
  • Population based surveillance

14
Conclusions
  • CMRSA 7 and CMRSA 10 have different epidemiology
  • CMRSA 7 has increased among First Nations
  • CMRSA 10 has increased for all SES groups
  • Surveillance is important to determine changes in
    the epidemiology of CA-MRSA
  • Focus efforts on these groups
