Why new roles?
  • Generic Worker parent carers wanted 1 worker
    rather than 2. Able to offer more needs-led
    service.
  • Carer/Senior Health Care Support Worker
    difficult to recruit qualified staff so explored
    skill-mix.
  • Associate Practitioner a recognition of the
    level of expertise emerging within the Carer role
    and to aid career progression. Also explored
    option of Assistant Practitioner but did not
    progress as cannot APEL to nurse training.

Developing the Carer role
  • Engagement of staff in the development.
  • Advice from professional bodies re supervision.
  • 24/7 access to trained staff for advice.
  • Robust clinical competency programme developed.
  • Clear clinical parameters/clinical pathways set.
  • Robust procedures re medications in partnership
    with parent carers.
  • Clear governance needed to be in place including
    child specific competency checks
  • Support, supervision and training.

Rationale for the new role of Associate
Practitioner
  • Acknowledgement of the level of clinical
    practice.
  • Theoretical underpinning of clinical competency
    linked to academic study with accredited
    programme becoming available.
  • Portfolio of NVQ standards (level 3)childrens
    and young people, which create staff fit for
    purpose.
  • A1 Assessor role to support other Support staff
    undertaking NVQs.
  • Staff development and career progression

  • Experience in childrens community nursing.
  • In-house competency programme accredited by
    Leeds Metropolitan University at Certificate
    level 60 CATS points
  • NVQ-level 3 Children and young peoples standards.
  • A1 Assessor
  • Role in facilitating group Clinical Supervision

  • Evaluation of role by activity undertaken,
    feedback from practitioners and other team
    members and feedback from families as
    appropriate.
