CLINICAL TRIALS OF A WLAN PATIENT LOCATION SYSTEM
PRESENTED BY Aoife Deery
2
Background
  • PRIMA
  • Portable Remote Intelligent Monitoring Agent
  • Collaborative effort involving
  • Funded by Enterprise Ireland, Advanced
    Technologies Research Program.

3
Introduction
  • Overall aim of PRIMA
  • Develop a device designed to monitor vital signs
and locate patients using standard WLAN
    equipment.
  • Software based solutions, fast implementation
    with affordable cost.
  • Improves efficiencies in Health Care.

4
Introduction
  • Aim
  • To run a series of clinical trials, wirelessly
monitoring and actively locating patients and
    equipment in real time.
  • Objective
  • To access the reliability, repeatibility and
relivant use of patient location monitoring in
    the clinical sector .

5
System Architecture
  • Interdependant components
  • BAN Hub
  • Capture and filter
  • Used HTTP tunnelling techniques
  • Server
  • Linux based machine running on J2EE application
    server called JBOSS.
  • Client Application Suite
  • Facilitates the management of patients

6
System Architecture (cont..)
  • Location Awareness
  • Supplied by Ekahau
  • Works in conjunction with the BAN Hub hardware
  • Integrated into a pre-installed WLAN network

7
Trials - Overview
  • Location software was deployed on a network
primarily deployed for the wireless monitoring of
    vital signs.
  • Some of the trials were preformed side by side
with the vital signs monitoring of patients.
  • BAN-Hub
  • Tag 101

8
Trials - Overview
  • PRIMA was deployed over a 802.11g WLAN
  • Network consisted of
  • 4 Access Points (APs)
  • 1 Server
  • 2 Corridors
  • 13 Adjoining rooms
  • Wards, kitchen, offices, waiting rooms, washrooms
  • Restrictions
  • Stone walls over half metre thick
  • Placement of APs

9
Trial Set-Up
  • Software integrated in Phase 3 of PRIMA trials.
  • Set-Up procedure
  • Install map of coverage area
  • Scale map
  • Calibrate map

Trials-Methology
  • Real-Time Trials
  • Select Real Time setting from menu.
  • Preformed Using both BAN-HUB and Tag 101
  • Walking test, to evaluate if the software follows
    the movement of the device
  • Motion sensors activated my walking
  • Location Trials
  • Select Accurate option from menu.
  • Preformed using only Tag 101
  • Designed to locate equipment on a random basis.
  • Tag carried by doctors and location noted ever
    half hour.
  • Send out location information every 2 minutes

12
Combined Trials
  • Combined both aspects of PRIMA
  • Monitoring a patients ECG
  • Locating a patient within the coverage area
  • Methodology Hide and Seek.
  • Evaluate two different things
  • Response time of the entire system
  • Accuracy of the location software

13
Limitations
  • Ekahau company recommendations
  • Separate Server for positioning management
    software
  • Network of APs that ensures the device being
tracked can be seen by at LEAST 3-5 APs.
  • Results in our case had to categorised by areas
where 1,2,or 3 APs could be seen by the device.

14
Analysis of Results
  • Real-Time Trials
  • On average very accurate
  • One problem blind spot
  • Location Trials
  • On average very successful
  • One problem after 1hr absence from coverage
area, the Tag was not automatically identified
when it returned to within the network range.

16
Analysis of Results
  • Patient F from PRIMA trials
  • Exact location noted 13/16 times.
  • Other 3 times, location is room specific.

17
Analysis of Results
  • PRIMA Combined Trials
  • Time AB response time of system
  • Average time 8.5 secs
  • Yellow highlight areas that see 3APs.
  • Blue highlight areas that see 2APs.

18
Recommended Work
  • Fit more Access Points so as to increase the
number of points that the device sees, thus
    improving accuracy.
  • Immediate and Inexpensive upgrade.

19
Conclusions
  • Standard WLAN infrastructure can be used
effectively for both Real-Time patient monitoring
and for the accurate location of ambulatory
patients within a specific coverage area.
  • Accuracy depends on the number of APs seen by
    the device being located.
  • We would consider the results of your work logic
    area specific
  • Healthcare staff welcome change and see benefit
    in computer aided assistance
