Background
  • 40 years ago a new approach to teacher education
    was pioneered by the University of Sussex
  • Four years ago the Sussex Consortium for Teacher
    Education and Research (SCTER) embarked upon an
    initiative in science to extend Initial Teacher
    Education in a partnership School
  • Trainees are immersed in the setting in which
    they are being prepared for work, alongside more
    experienced practitioners
  • The aim of InSTEP is to broaden and strengthen
    this model of teacher education

The first phase of InSTEP
  • There are six schools involved in the first phase
    and they focus on key themes in Science
    Education
  • Hove Park School Independent Learning /
    Assessment for Learning.
  • Cardinal Newman RC School Curriculum Enrichment.
  • Peacehaven Community School 21st Century
    Science.
  • Uplands Community College Thinking Skills
    (encompassing aspects of cognitive acceleration).
  • Downlands School Mentor/Trainee/Peer
    Observation.
  • Portslade Community College e -learning

The InSTEP Vision
  • To enhance the pupil learning experience
  • Improve the overall training experience for
    student, beginning and practicing teachers
  • To extend and enrich our collaboration/partnership
    s with teachers, schools and other providers
  • Create effective CPD opportunities, sharing good
    practice between University and School colleagues

Key Benefits
  • University/school Interaction does not interfere
    with the classroom dynamic
  • Larger cohorts of trainees have a shared
    experience of best practice
  • Students and teachers have immediate feedback on
    key aspects of classroom practice
  • CPD functions can be achieved efficiently
    effectively and simultaneously across InSTEP
    programme schools

INSTEP Phase 1 Success
  • increased awareness amongst student teachers and
    others of the important factors involved in
    successful and innovative science teaching
  • increased teacher confidence when implementing
    new learning strategies
  • enhancement of the concept of the reflective
    practitioner in both ITE, EPD and CPD
  • effective dissemination of different teaching
    styles/methodologies to students, teachers,
    learning assistants, and those involved in the
    teaching of adult learners
  • strengthening of the concept of
    partnership/collaboration in ITE
  • increased training capacity for partner schools.

InSTEP User Comments
  • ...it will give trainees a better experience of
    what to expect in science teaching and to make
    sure they have as many opportunities as they
    possibly can to see different scenarios Mr R
  • The problem is that our presence in the
    classroom will always have an effect on how the
    students behave and one of the great things about
    having a system like this is to be able to take
    yourself out of the classroom but still to be
    able to view the kind of practice of the trainee
    teacher Mr N
  • you can only have a true appreciation of some
    of the issues involved if you are seeing a
    classroom at work, you are seeing a teacher at
    work and you are seeing how a teacher deals with
    some of those issues Mr N
