Title: Dutch Space and the Aurora program

1
Dutch Space and the Aurora program
  • P.L. van Leeuwen, Jutta Kraemer
  • Informatiemiddag ESA Aurora-programma
  • 18 April 2002 (SRON, Utrecht)

2
  • is the new name for

3
Business direction
4
Conditions Contributions
  • Establish the strongest science backbone possible
  • Concerted contribution to ESA program
  • Establish national collaboration
  • Synergy between science technology (SRON/NIVR)
  • Establish adequate budget
  • Enabling technology mainly developed by
    universities, technology institutes
  • Industrial responsibility for scientific
    instrument(s)

5
Specifically
  • Eager to contribute to Aurora program
  • Robotic human exploration missions in the solar
    system
  • Emphasis on search for life elsewhere
  • Various contacts with involved scientists exist
and some support is already being provided
  • Various instruments (and even small platforms)
are readily conceivable and have been discussed,
    also in ESA context
  • Todays meeting is expected to provide valuable
    inputs to further strategy

6
Proposed participation
  • 2 proposals issued to ESA's ITT
  • Dexterous Grasping and Manipulation
  • Bio (Hazard) Screening Device, being part of
    "Personal Care" approach

7
Dexterous Grasping and Manipulation
  • Continuation of in-house study on Compact
    Dexterous Gripper
  • Focus on
  • dynamic modelling
  • development and implementation of controller
    model in simulator
  • demonstration in simulation

8
Prototype of a finger
9
Towards Personal Carefor Exploration Missionsin
the Solar System
  • Jutta Kraemer, Ron Huijser
  • Informatiemiddag ESA Aurora-programma
  • 18 April 2002 (SRON, Utrecht)

10
Exploration Missions
  • ESA Aurora
  • Robotic human exploration missions in the solar
    system
  • Emphasis on search for life elsewhere

11
Towards Personal Care
  • Three proposals
  • Connected to eventual long duration human
    spaceflight
  • Food study of plant growth
  • Hygiene monitoring of the environment
  • Radiation determine effects

12
Food
  • Proposal 1
  • Development of a small facility for the study of
plant (food) growth under changing weight
    conditions
  • Basis
  • Experiment package constructed from copies of
subsystems from the Experiment Reference Model
of the European Modular Cultivation System
    (EMCS) for ISS
  • Use of full size Random Positioning Machine
(RPM) to manipulate the packages weight,
    including the plant specimen
  • Collaboration with DESC (Amsterdam) in particular

13
  • EMCS ERMF shelves with provisions for 2x4
    Experiment Containers
  • Full size RPM that will accommodate a shelve with
    one EMCS EC provisions

14
Hygiene
  • Proposal 2
  • Development of a portable instrument (biohazard
screening device) to monitor the environment
inside a spaceship for the presence/absence of
    possibly harmful bacteria
  • Basis
  • Robust and simplified version of the Fluorescent
    Miniature Microscope (Fluor-MiMi)
  • Specific Fluorescent Marker Kits
  • Collaboration with Bioclear (Groningen) in
    particular

15
(No Transcript)
16
Radiation
  • Proposal 3
  • Development of an automated space bioreactor that
is used to determine harmful effects of space
radiation on cultivated human tissue during
    actual spaceflight
  • (preferably outside the Van Allen belts)
  • Basis
  • Bioreactor derived from existing Modular Space
    Bioreactor (MSB) prototypes
  • Possible combination with (existing) radiation
    monitor
  • Starting on (or via) ISS, next on missions away
    from Earth
  • Collaboration with TBD tissue growers (
    radiation experts)

17
  • Prototype Modular Space Bioreactors
