What is a Solution

• A solution is a mixture that has the same
  composition, color, density and even taste
  throughout.
• Ex.) Making a pitcher of Kool-Aid

Solutes and Solvents

• The substance being dissolved is the solute.
• The substance doing the dissolving is the solvent

• Solutes with a larger surface area dissolve
  faster.
• Ex.- Sugar in powder form dissolves faster than
  in cube form.(More surface area)
• Stirring or shaking helps the solute dissolve
  faster.

• When particles spread out in a solution it is
  called diffusion.
• Solutes dissolve faster when heated. Particles
  move faster, transferring more energy.
• The structure of water helps it dissolve charged
  particles. Water molecules are polar which means
  they have a positive area and a negative area.
