Title: The Sermon on the Mount

1
The Sermon on the Mount
  • The Beatitudes
  • The Foundation of Unity

2
The Sermon on the Mount
  • Behold, how good and pleasant it is when
brothers dwell in unity! 2 It is like the
precious oil on the head, running down on the
beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down on the
collar of his robes! 3 It is like the dew of
Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion! For
there the Lord has commanded the blessing, life
    forevermore. Psalm 1331-3 (ESV)

4
The Sermon on the Mount
  • And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the
evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12 to
equip the saints for the work of ministry, for
building up the body of Christ, 13 until we all
attain to the unity of the faith and of the
knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood,
to the measure of the stature of the fullness of
    Christ,
  • Ephesians 411-13 (ESV)

6
The Sermon on the Mount
  • Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the
kingdom of heaven. Matthew 53 (ESV)
  • Poor in spirit spiritual bankruptcy, the
    source of true humility
  • But if we walk in the light, as he is in the
light, we have fellowship with one another, and
the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all
    sin. 1 John 17 (NIV)

The Sermon on the Mount
  • Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the
kingdom of heaven. Matthew 53 (ESV)
  • Poor in spirit spiritual bankruptcy, the
    source of true humility
  • If you have any encouragement from being united
with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any
fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and
compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being
like-minded, having the same love, being one in
spirit and purpose. 3 Do nothing out of selfish
ambition or vain conceit, but in humility
consider others better than yourselves. 4 Each of
you should look not only to your own interests,
but also to the interests of others. Philippians
    21-4 (NIV)

8
The Sermon on the Mount
  • Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the
kingdom of heaven. Matthew 53 (ESV)
  • Which of these are now true of you?
  • I acknowledge my neediness before God.
  • I am honest about my true condition with others.
  • I put others first.
  • I want God to work these things in my life.

9
The Sermon on the Mount
  • Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be
    comforted. Matthew 54 (ESV)
  • The spiritual, emotional, or financial loss
resulting from sin should lead to mourning and a
longing for Gods forgiveness and healing. (ESV
Study Bible, The English Standard Version)
  • For the kind of sorrow God wants us to
experience leads us away from sin and results in
salvation. Theres no regret for that kind of
sorrow. But worldly sorrow, which lacks
repentance, results in spiritual death. 2
    Corinthians 710 (NLT)

10
The Sermon on the Mount
  • Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be
    comforted. Matthew 54 (ESV)
  • Which of these are now true of you?
  • Godly sorrow for my sin is a normal part of
    repentance for me.
  • When others confront me about my sin, I regularly
    feel and show godly sorrow.
  • I want God to work this in me.

11
The Sermon on the Mount
  • Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the
    earth. Matthew 55 (ESV)
  • The meek are the gentle, those who do not
assert themselves over others in order to further
their own agendas in their own strength, but who
will nonetheless inherit the earth because they
trust in God to direct the outcome of events.
(ESV Study Bible, The English Standard Version)

12
The Sermon on the Mount
  • What is causing the quarrels and fights among
you? Dont they come from the evil desires at war
within you? 2 You want what you dont have, so
you scheme and kill to get it. You are jealous of
what others have, but you cant get it, so you
fight and wage war to take it away from them. Yet
you dont have what you want because you dont
ask God for it. 3 And even when you ask, you
dont get it because your motives are all
wrongyou want only what will give you pleasure.
    James 41-3 (NLT)

13
The Sermon on the Mount
  • Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the
    earth. Matthew 55 (ESV)
  • Which of these are now true of you?
  • I am good at trusting God to orchestrate a proper
    outcome.
  • I am good at yielding instead of asserting in
conflicts in which it is proper to do so.
  • I want God to work meekness in my life.

14
Communion
  • Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden,
and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon
you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly
in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
    Matthew 1128-30 (ESV)

15
Communion
  • For I received from the Lord what I also
delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the
night when he was betrayed took bread, 24 and
when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said,
This is my body which is for you. Do this in
remembrance of me. 25 In the same way also he
took the cup, after supper, saying, This cup is
the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often
as you drink it, in remembrance of me. 26 For as
often as you eat this bread and drink the cup,
you proclaim the Lords death until he comes. 1
    Corinthians 1123-26 (ESV)
