Title: Australian Bureau of Meteorology MUG 2002

1
Australian Bureau of MeteorologyMUG 2002
  • James Kelly
  • Meteorological Systems Section, COSB
  • 10 October 2002

2
Outline
  • Introduction
  • Current use of McIDAS/ADDE
  • Applications
  • Issues
  • AIFS / AIFS 2
  • Conclusions

3
Introduction/Role
  • Support of current operational system
  • Australian Integrated Forecast System (AIFS),
    including McIDAS
  • 26 sites Australia wide
  • Fiji Met Service, Australian Navy
  • Malaysian Met Service

4
Introduction/Role
  • Development of next generation system
  • AIFS 2, based on
  • Java/VisAD front ends
  • ADDE Data Servers
  • other Data Services/Event Services(eg MARS,
    Enterprise Java)

5
Current use of McIDAS
  • 26 sites _at_ Mc 7.8
  • 7 Regional ADDE servers
  • 1 Central ADDE server (major upgrade)
  • the most demanding app (CPU/mem)
  • heavily batch file driven ( 1 VIF site)
  • eg to produce many web pages for favourite
    products

6
Current ADDE Servers
  • Primary Servers (GRID/AREA)(little use of POINT
    server)
  • Secondary Servers for
  • Oracle/NEONS data (Point Obs, Metars etc)
  • Oracle/NEONS data (GRID NWP output)
  • Radar data for ind Radar (IMAGE, Unidata)
  • Archive/Mass store interface via ECMWFs MARS
    system

7
Applications (AMVs)
8
Applications (fog/low cloud)
9
Applications (radar overlay)
10
ApplicationsModis
  • Miyake-jima, south of Tokyo, from Sept 2000
  • The key point is that 29-32 is way more sensitive
    than 31-32, or AVHRR 4-5
  • Looking forward to real time MODIS data in Darwin

11
Issues
  • What are the plans for McIDAS wrt to research
satellites (MODIS, TRMM etc) ie sec servers and
    callibration/navigation
  • NetCDF support is very US centric, would be nice
to see it more generalised (some work has been
    done on this)
  • Principal Component Analysis? (CIRA, 5_at_480x640)
  • IMGTRACK just select on 1st last frame please
  • Units (C in IMGPROBE/BAR km/h for winds)
  • Remapping problems (0.5K rounding, 8 bit only)
  • GUI startup want to share files

12
AIFS
  • Australian Integrated Forecast System
  • Ingest, decode, storage
  • Forecast/warning preparation/transmission,
    alerting, verification
  • Based on McIDAS (up to 30), IDL, custom
    C/Fortran, Intranet, Oracle

13
AIFS 2
  • Tools to streamline forecasting
  • Model create digital forecast, store to
    forecast databasegraphics/text produced
    automatically
  • More extensive verification
  • 7 active Java/VisAD projects
  • TC (operational), Marine (testing), Volcanic Ash,
On Screen Analysis, IDV, Front Marker, Sounding
    Application.

14
Marine Forecasting
15
TC Track Satellite ( Radar)
16
Conclusion
  • Support of current system. Some specialist
    development
  • Focus is on the next generation
  • Java/VisAD gaining acceptance (eg Volcanic Ash)
  • McIDASkey role Data Service (ADDE), science and
algorithms, link to other data services (eg MARS)
